MSL roundup: Schaumburg holds off Fremd in West opener

Schaumburg (4-1) rallied from a halftime deficit and held off seven-time defending Mid-Suburban West football champion Fremd 17-14 in Friday night's division opener.

Shepard Little rushed for 176 yards and a 4-yard touchdown that put the Saxons ahead to stay at 10-7 with 57 seconds left in the third quarter. Mark Iannotti threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Bob Quilico to make it 17-7 with 9:03 to play.

Quilico had 11 tackles, Joe Zolper had 3 tackles for losses, 2 sacks and a stop for no gain and Pat Felde had a sack as the Saxons allowed only 154 total yards until Fremd (1-4) put together a 99-yard touchdown drive in the final 2:20.

Fremd freshman quarterback Sam Beutler threw for 145 yards and a 35-yard touchdown pass to Jeff Diegel for a 7-3 lead 49 seconds before halftime. Beutler's 4-yard run capped the late drive with 37.5 seconds left but an onside kick went out of bounds.

Fremd will have to win its final four games to extend its MSL record streak of playoff trips to 16.

Barrington 38, Conant 21: Running back Chase Murdock rushed scored 3 touchdowns and rushed for 217 yards on 28 carries as Barrington became playoff eligible (5-0) by winning its MSL West opener 38-21 at Conant.

The Broncos bounced back from a 7-0 deficit to post the win over the Cougars (2-3, 0-1), who received 79 rushing yards from Jacobi Sims, who scored their first TD on a 26-yard run.

Prospect 48, Hersey 7: Prospect (4-1) scored early and often in jumping out to a 28-0 lead six minutes into the game, and the Knights never looked back in a 48-7 Mid-Suburban East victory over visiting Hersey.

Prospect senior quaterback Steve Dazzo had 87 yards on 12 carries, including touchdown runs of 26 and 9 yards, and he also completed 4 of 9 passes for 119 yards and 1 touchdown for the Knights

Senior Grant DePalma had 2 catches for 76 yards, including a 55-yard touchdown reception, and he also scored on 9-yard run for Prospect.

Hersey (3-2) had four starters miss the game for disciplinary reasons, and the Huskies offense had 4 turnovers and were held to 111 total yards by a stingy Prospect defense.

Rolling Meadows 41, Wheeling 14: Sophomore quarterback Jack Milas completed 8 of 12 passes for 245 yards and 3 touchdowns in Rolling Meadows' 41-14 win at Wheeling.

The Mustangs (3-2, 1-0) led 20-7 at halftime and led 34-7 after three quarters. The Wilcats dropped to 1-4 and 0-1.

Mustangs linebacker Sean Connor had 10 tackles and 2 assists.

Elk Grove 23, Buffalo Grove 7: The Elk Grove defense held Buffalo Grove to 229 yards of offense - 109 coming on 2 passing plays - and got 3 rushing touchdowns from quarterback Nick Meyer en route to a 23-7 victory over the Bison on Friday night.

Elk Grove (4-1, 1-0) was able to overcome 4 turnovers, and a 64-yard touchdown pass from Buffalo Grove (2-3, 0-1) running back Brian Busch to receiver Brian Akialis that cut the Grenadier lead to 2 points on the first play of the fourth quarter.

Meyer was held in check for most of the game, but still finished with 144 yards on 13 carries and completed 10-of-17 passes for 109 yards. Akialis had 116 receiving yards on 3 catches for the Bison.

Palatine 49, Hoffman 7: Nick McHugh returned from injury to catch 2 touchdown passes and a 2-point conversion pass from Cody Bobbit for Palatine (3-2, 1-0) in the MSL West. Bobbit was 21-for-28 passing for 300 yards with a touchdown pass to Egan Malley and Jim Smearman rushed for 84 yards and 3 TDs.

Jermaine Moore had an 85-yard touchdown run to get Hoffman (0-5, 0-1) within 14-7 in the first quarter.
