Fenton clinches MSC crown, playoffs

When Alan Geneva lines up at quarterback for Fenton, opposing teams know what's coming next, but having that advance knowledge certainly doesn't mean they can do anything about it.

A lightning quick runner with crafty moves and an uncanny knack to the hit the holes, Geneva usually runs the ball with much success out of the Wildcat formation.

In Friday's football showdown against Riverside-Brookfield with a playoff berth and the Metro Suburban Conference title on the line, Geneva's Wildcat play infused some much needed energy into a stagnant Bison offense late in the contest. The junior scored a touchdown run in the fourth quarter to lift Fenton to a 20-13 victory over the host Bulldogs in Brookfield.

Geneva's score from 16 yards out with 10:10 left in the game came at a critical time as R-B had rallied back with 13 points in the third quarter to tie it on Senior Night. Geneva's run prior to the touchdown sprint went for 49 yards.

“At that point of the game, R-B had done a great job of adjusting to what we are doing with our leads and tosses,” said Fenton coach Mark Kos. “(The Bulldogs) were taking away the hitches a little bit so we thought it was time to try to change the pace of the game and change the dynamic.

“Alan Geneva, he is just an athlete. Sometimes it looks like nothing is there and he finds that crack and seem. He just has speed.”

“Coming together as a team in the fourth quarter (was key),” said Geneva, who rushed for 93 yards on 12 carries.

The Bison (6-3, 5-1) will find out who they play when the pairings are announced tonight. One thing is for sure they will open on the road, but this is a team that has a growing confidence for battling adversity and getting the job done.

With the game on its home field, R-B had that advantage and also the fact that it had beaten Fenton 22-21 in the earlier meeting between the two teams.

The Bison came out looking to put the Bulldogs (4-5, 4-2) away early. After a 87-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Eron McCoy got called back because of a block in the back penalty, Fenton scored four plays later on a 1-yard plunge by quarterback Sean Havlovic. The big play during that drive was a 25-yard run by Chris Butz.

Then with a little more than a minute to play before the half, the Bison scored again when Havlovic connected with Frank DiLauro on a 7-yard pass play for a 13-0 lead at the break.

R-B's big play came from quarterback David Skowronski, who raced 53 yards for a touchdown late in the third quarter. The extra point tied it, but Fenton rallied back.

“Hats off to Fenton,” said R-B coach Jason Rech. “They did some stuff scheme wise that went against their tendencies. They took advantage.”

Added Havlovic: “This win means a lot. Winning the conference championship and beating our rivals on their field, it means almost the world.”
