Geneva, Fenton rack up the yards in win

Fenton’s Alan Geneva has been a pass-catching machine thus far this season. That didn’t change Friday night against Maine West as the Bison cruised to a 28-7 win.

Geneva, who caught 12 passes for 271 yards in the season opener against Leyden, followed that performance with 13 catches and 119 yards against the Warriors. But in Friday’s game he showed more of an all-around game, as he chipped in with 30 yards rushing on 5 carries, with three of those five carries finishing with him standing in the end zone.

“Coach has been wanting me to get in the end zone more on receptions,” Geneva said. “We work on our screens and I got close tonight, but I was able to get in the end zone running the ball. The most important thing about tonight is we improved to 2-0 on the season.”

Fenton (2-0) jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead as Geneva scored on runs of 3 and 2 yards out in the first quarter. Maine West (0-2) made things a little more interesting at the end of the first half as quarterback Jake Korbecki scored from 1-yard out with 50 seconds remaining in the half, getting the score to 14-6 with the Warriors receiving the second-half kickoff.

To start the second half the Warriors were driving when Fenton linebacker Alessandro Porcelli intercepted a screen pass with just more than six minutes left in the third quarter and ran the ball back 37 yards to the 7-yard line. Bison signalcaller Sean Havlovic scored two plays later, busting the game open to a 20-7 lead.

“We had some nice momentum at the end of the first half and that carried over to the second half,” Maine West coach Mike Smith said. “After the interception we were never able to recover. We had a really nice drive going and they took that from us. That was the changing point in the game.”

Fenton coach Mark Kos was really pleased with how his team came out and made some plays when they needed to make them, but he spoke more on the bigger picture of the program after the game.

“To start the season 2-0 is really big for our program,” Kos said. “We have some lofty goals this season with one of them being the way opponents perceive Fenton. We want to show people we are a tough team and not one you can walk all over. I am really challenging our kids and I think our kids are up for that challenge.”

Havlovic finished the game 22 of 32 for 207 yards.
