Glenbard South falters at Crete-Monee

Glenbard South coach Jeremy Cordell knew this would be a tough matchup for his Raiders.

Crete-Monee used 366 yards of first-half offense and 6 first-half touchdowns to help overcome Glenbard South 64-19 Friday night in Crete. Wesley Sanders returned a kickoff 91 yards for a second quarter Raiders touchdown and added a 30-yard touchdown reception later in the quarter. But on this night it would not be enough to keep pace with the offensive juggernaut that is the Crete-Monee offense.

“They’re good, no doubt about it,” Cordell said of the Warriors. “They’re a team that’s going to go deep this year in 6A for sure. They have a lot of skill and a lot of talent. We had trouble keeping up with them especially on defense.”

After the Warriors jumped out to a 36-0 lead, Sanders’ two touchdowns brought the Raiders within three scores, but it would be as close as Glenbard South would get on this night.

“Before that kick return I was just like, we need to score,” Sanders said. “Don’t put our heads down because the game’s not over yet. That was my mindset before that kick, so I just did my assignment and did my job right.”

The Raiders struggled mightily to stop the Crete-Monee offense, and Warrior quarterback Marcus Terrell finished the game with 325 yards passing and 4 touchdown passes. The Raiders managed just 75 yards of offense in the first half and finished the game with 5 first downs.

“We showed some fight,” Cordell said. “We showed some good things there in the second quarter especially. We can’t lose hope and we won’t lose hope. I know our kids are excited to get into conference play next week.”

Junior Matt Loos added a fourth-quarter touchdown run of 13 yards for the Raiders. Glenbard South was only able to complete 4 passes on the night for 46 yards. Punter Torey Fobbs had a nice night for the Raiders, pinning Crete-Monee at their end of the field on numerous punts, but the Raiders defense could not capitalize and slow down the Warriors attack.

“What we can take from this game is we need to come out harder,” Sanders said. “Don’t let down to early and don’t be soft. We just have to move on to next week.”
