Wallace engineers big debut at MIT

Talk about making a grand entrance for your team.

Former Fremd all-area running back Justin Wallace rushed for 170 yards and 1 touchdown for Massachusetts Institute of Technology in his first collegiate game as the Engineers scored 28 first-half points en route to a 35-13 victory over Becker College.

It was the most points scored by MIT since taking a 48-15 win against Western New England in 2008.

Wallace carried the ball 33 times. For his efforts, he was the MIT Athlete of the Week.

After the first week, he was the only freshman in his Division III 16-team conference among the top 10 in rushing.

In its second game, MIT lost 51-13 to Massachusetts Maritime. The Engineers scored their final points on their first drive of the fourth quarter when Wallace ran for 49 yards on 6 carries in a 72-yard drive he capped with a 9-yard TD run.

Wallace finished with 68 yards rushing and has 238 yards for the season with 2 touchdowns from 54 carries.

Last season, Wallace gained 1,551 yards rushing for coach Mike Donatucci's Vikings.

Ÿ Millikin quarterback Matt Holmes (Wheeling) threw 28- and 51-yard TD passes in the first half of Big Blue's 51-13 victory over Greenville College.

Holmes added two second-half rushing touchdowns. He was 15-for-25 passing for 176 yards and 2 touchdowns and rushed for 71 yards and two scores.

Women's soccer

DePaul freshman Sarah Gorden (Conant) netted a golden goal in the 100th minute to lift the Blue Demons to a 2-1 overtime win over the University of Minnesota.

Gorden's strike carried DePaul to its second straight win after starting the season with five defeats.

“It was an awesome feeling,” Gorden said of her first collegiate goal. “I knew after the first step that I had beaten the defender.”

“Sarah was beating Minnesota on the right side all game, and this was the most aggressive she has played this season,” DePaul head coach Erin Chastain said. “There had not been any teammates in the box for her crosses, so she made a good decision to shoot one.”

Ÿ Clemson sophomore midfielder Vanessa Laxgang (Hersey) netted her fourth goal for an early 1-0 lead in the 14th minute against Furman. But the Tigers fell in overtime, 3-2, in the final match of the Carolina's Cup tournament.

Despite the Tigers also suffering a 2-0 loss to South Carolina on Friday, Laxgang's efforts earned her a spot on the 2011 Carolina's Cup All-Tournament Team.

Ÿ Indiana senior Carly Samp (Barrington) tallied her fourth goal of the season in the 85th minute as the Hoosiers defeated Xavier 1-0.

Samp also added an assist against Marquette in a 2-1 loss.

Ÿ Toledo freshman Alexis Tice (Fremd) represented her team on the all-tournament team for the Red Raider Classic. Tice was on the pitch for 136 minutes in the midfield.

Ÿ Augustana junior Bridget McDermott (Prospect) has shared time in goal. She has logged almost 180 minutes and is 2-0 with a goals-against average of 0.50 and a .900 save percentage. She has taken part in 2 shutouts.

The sophomore forward scored the game-winning goal in the 78th minute in a 1-0 win over Franklin and he also tallied a goal and an assist in the Cardinals' 5-0 win over Rockford.

Men's cross country

Augustana senior Mike Tisza (Hersey) was selected as the “Runner of the Week” in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin.

Tisza's second-place finish in the All-American Invitational held at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa helped the Vikings finish second to Wisconsin-LaCrosse by only 1 point.
