It’s all Waubonsie Valley against Metea Valley

Those expecting another close football game between Waubonsie Valley and Metea Valley were deeply disappointed.

Waubonsie scored 48 points off turnovers and a blocked punt, beating host Metea 51-0 in Friday’s Upstate Eight Conference Valley Division outing in Aurora.

“It’s a snowball affect,” said Waubonsie coach Paul Murphy, whose team nipped Metea 21-20 last season. “Once you get turnovers from those kids it’s hard for the other team (to stop).”

The Warriors’ 10-0 second-quarter lead got out of hand when Waubonsie (4-1, 2-1) scored 3 touchdowns in a 36-second span in the last minute before halftime.

Zac Steele’s blocked punt led to Austin Guido’s second touchdown run of the night. He finished with 100 yards behind linemen Tony Dilg, Ryan Kallas, Chris Weaver, Steve Mann and Adam Szott.

“We just all pushed together and made sure we could drive them off the ball, made sure we could punish them,” said Weaver, the center.

Hugh Griffin continued the punishment, returning a fumble 4 yards for a touchdown, his second straight game with a defensive score. Next, Steele recovered a fumble leading to Demetrius Gray’s 8-yard touchdown catch for a 31-0 halftime lead.

Steele, a senior defensive lineman, was pumped considering he played alongside Metea’s seniors when they were all freshmen at Waubonsie, before the split.

“Rivalry. There’s fire in the belly. They’ve been chirping all week, so it’s nice to give it to them,” he said.

Waubonsie bumped it to 38-0 on Austin Ameri’s 60-yard touchdown catch from Dylan Warden and got the clock running early in the fourth quarter on a 1-yard run by Demario Webb.

Metea Valley (3-2, 1-2) fumbled 6 times, lost 4 of them and also had a pass intercepted by Waubonsie’s Jim Delaney.

Though linebacker Donovan Rowsey flew around on defense for 10 tackles, last week’s knee injury to Metea starting quarterback Jarrett House threw a monkey wrench into the Mustangs’ offensive continuity. As well, starting running back Cameron Wilcox, who through four games had run for 409 yards, was also out injured.

“We were hoping we wouldn’t take such a big step backward, but obviously we’ve got a long, long way to go,” said Metea coach Ted Monken. “The building process, I guess we’re still framing the house here. We’re definitely not putting any shingles on yet.”
