Fenton cruises past St. Francis de Sales

The Fenton Bison are enjoying their best start since 1984 after defeating the St. Francis de Sales Pioneers 56-6 Friday evening.

The duo of Fenton seniors quarterback Sean Havlovic and running back Alan Geneva connected for 4 touchdowns and linked for 171 of the 287 passing yards Fenton posted.

Fenton quarterback Joe Butz added two rushing touchdowns, while Havlovic pitched in a score of his own on the ground.

“We saw film, but we didn’t know what to expect,” Havlovic said. “We read their guys on the field. We found some openings where we could throw the ball.”

Fenton (5-0) did not waste time in scoring. After Fenton senior defensive lineman Freddy Joyner blocked St. Francis de Sales’ punt, Havlovic and Geneva met for their first touchdown 9 yards out. Fenton tacked on a 2-point conversion to go up 8-0.

Havlovic went 11 of 18 for 219 yards.

Fenton found much success as it exploited the Pioneers defense by throwing to the flat routes. While the Pioneers focused their attention to the deep coverage on Fenton’s wideouts, the short passes were there for the picking.

When Fenton senior cornerback Augie Castellanos snagged a second turnover for the Bison, Havlovic’s first play was a 34-yard pass to Geneva out of the flat for a touchdown. Fenton jumped to a comfortable 15-0 lead with 6:16 left in the first quarter.

“We’ve struggled with the (offensive) line early in the season,” Geneva said. “Today they really stepped it up. (Ryan) Rogers and (Frank) Joyner had a really good game. The line really proved a lot since last week.”

The defensive side for Fenton attained much success against the Pioneers as well. Castellanos stole 2 interceptions from the Pioneers, while senior corner Ricky Villegas had 1. Fenton also forced four turnovers on downs.

The first half closed with two more Havlovic and Geneva pass plays and a Havlovic 1-yard rush to lead 36-0.

The Pioneers (0-5) were struggling on both phases, but senior defensive back and wide receiver Willie Orange would not go without a fight. To begin the second half, Orange snagged an interception off of Havlovic and returned it 31 yards. This return was not only St. Francis de Sales’ first appearance in Fenton territory, but its first in the red zone.

Orange reappeared for a 9-yard touchdown catch from Pioneer freshman quarterback Eric Matthews. However, this was their only score of the game.

“(The Pioneers) were playing hard and showing a lot of effort,” said St. Francis de Sales coach Wendel Walton. “We’re still building a program. We need to execute the basics. We only have 15 kids on the roster, but every game they’re showing progress.”

“I don’t take anything away from the Bison. They’re playing like a 5-0 team. We’ll come to practice Monday and go back to work.”

Fenton opens Metro Suburban Conference play at home next week against Elmwood Park in its homecoming game.

“We play for the name on the front; it’s more important than the name on the back,” said Fenton coach Mark Kos. “We need to have to keep our consistency with our offense. Everyone is doing a great job and not making silly mistakes. I’m very happy where our program is heading.”
