Reuss, Warren gain momentum

Could Warren quarterback Adam Reuss top last week’s performance, when he passed for a career-high 179 yards?

The answer was yes.

He passed for 295 yards and 2 touchdowns to lead the host Blue Devils past Mundelein 55-20 in a North Suburban Lake Division football game on Friday.

Reuss completed 11 passes of 29 passes with 2 interceptions.

“We’re trying to pick up the speed a little bit,” said Warren coach Dave Mohapp, whose Blue Devils are 2-4 overall and 2-2 in the NSC Lake. “It was a good game for us. The kids executed very well.

“Adam did a real good job for us tonight. He understands our offense pretty well, and he timed it well with our receivers.”

Wide receiver Mitch Munda caught 6 passes and 2 touchdown passes for 138 yards, while Connor Iwema caught 3 passes and 108 yards and 1 touchdown pass.

On the third play of the game, Tario Ferguson recovered a Mustangs fumble on the 42, and four plays later, Patrick Kenney kicked a 43-yard field goal to give Warren a 3-0 lead 10:35 left in the first quarter.

Three minutes later, Reuss threw to Munda for a 26-yard touchdown as Warren led 10-0 midway through the first quarter.

“We ran a ‘cobra’ and (Munda) was standing alone in the end zone,” Reuss said.

Mundelein made it to the scoreboard when Cole Hinchman recovered a fumble and returned it 42 yards to make the score 10-7 with 6:47 left in the first quarter.

“We had a blitz called and I got to the line pretty easily,” said Hinchman, who scored his first career touchdown. “He muffed the ball and it fell right into my hands, and I went for the touchdown.”

That was the closest Mundelein got as Warren exploded for 18 unanswered points.

Kenney kicked a 25-yard field goal with less than three minutes left in the quarter, and Iwema returned a Mundelein punt 57 yards. Warren executed the two-point converson to gain a 20-7 first-quarter lead.

Then Warren produced 22 points in the second quarter and 13 in the third to build a 55-13 lead early in the third quarter.

The Blue Devils’ defense alllowed only 94 yards.

Mundelein coach Bob Stone felt this defense played well.

“If we had eliminated some of their big plays in the first quarter, it might have been a closer football game,” said Stone, whose Mustangs are 0-6. “We didn’t move the ball well on offense all night.”
