Hampshire gets first FVC Fox win

Hampshire finally got a chance to celebrate.

Chase Lundry scored 3 touchdowns, but Omar Perez’s extra point was the difference as the Whip-Purs downed Johnsburg, 27-26 in overtime Friday night in Hampshire.

The Whip-Purs celebrated homecoming with their first win of the year and their first in the Fox Valley Conference Fox Division.

The Skyhawks went first in the extra session. They scored, but missed the extra point. Fittingly, Lundry gained all 10 yards on Hampshire’s overtime possession, covering the last 2 yards on third down. The stadium exploded when Perez’s kick sailed through the uprights.

“I’m so excited we finally got a victory,” said Lundry. “And it came on homecoming, too.”

“I’m happy for our guys, because they keep working hard,” said Hampshire coach Dan Cavanaugh. “It was a tough go, and its great to see them get the win here on homecoming. Hard work pays off.”

Johnsburg led 14-0 after one quarter. The Skyhawks’ spread offense caught Hampshire a bit off guard, but after a couple of defensive adjustments, the momentum started to swing.

“We just kept on going. We decided to just do our job, change a few things, and then do what we had to do,” Cavanaugh said.

The Whips (1-5, 1-1) got on the board just before halftime on Lundry’s first scoring run. It was set up by a nifty throwback pass from fullback Tyler Crater to quarterback Kyle Anderson. After making the catch, Anderson was forced out of bounds at the 2, but Lundry took it in from there.

Lundry finished with 183 yards on 33 carries.

After the break, Hampshire pulled closer on a Lundry 7-yard run. The Whips took the lead with 3:10 left on Nick Antonacci’s 1-yard plunge. The 2-point conversion made it 20-14.

But the Skyhawks weren’t finished. Jon Torgerson completed 3 straight passes in the hurry up offense, moving the ball to the 12. Five plays later, he took it over from the 1. The extra point was no good, sending the game into overtime.
