IC passes the test vs. St. Edward
Matt Stacionis

It was easy to see how Immaculate Conception's receiver duo of Clark Brinkman and Dakota Baker did on their homework assignment from Knights' coach Bill Krefft.

"Straight As," Baker said. "Coach has us writing papers on what their guys are going to do. We knew we were going to have to put it in the air against (St. Edward)."

Quarterback Demetrius Carr was 8 for 8 for 240 yards and 4 touchdowns on IC's homecoming as the Knights defeated St. Edward 49-22 in Suburban Christian Conference play Friday night.

Immaculate Conception (4-0) ran just 31 offensive plays in putting up its 49 points, scoring on 5 drives of 4 plays or fewer.

St. Edward (1-3) answered back in spurts but just could never get a handle on the aerial attack from the Knights.

"They're the complete package," Green Wave coach Mike Rolando said. "We did a good job stopping the run. We'd get them in third and long and then they'd hit a long pass. They hit the big plays."

Carr completed 6 passes in the first half and 3 of them were scoring throws of 20 yards or more. He first gave the Knights a lead when he found Brinkman (4 catches, 101 yards) in the end zone with 6:07 left in the first quarter. After a 5-yard touchdown run from Green Wave quarterback Mikey Castoro (19 rushes, 76 yards), Carr answered back by capping a 4-play drive off with a 54-yard touchdown bomb to Baker (3 catches, 75 yards).

He found Brinkman on a 23-yard touchdown throw just with just 33 seconds left in the first half cushioning Immaculate Conception's lead 21-7 the half. He also had a 64-yard throw to Tim Hipskind.

"We knew going into the game we could exploit (the St. Edward secondary)," said Carr, who added 55 yards on the ground. "Their corners weren't that good at back peddling. We wanted to go deep on them. It was like practice hitting targets."

Running back Joey Iavarone scored twice on runs of 15 and 9 yards in the third quarter to put the game well in hand for IC.

St. Edward finished the game with 4 different players throwing a pass. Sophomore Joe Mullen found Andrew Yarwood on a 10-yard throw on fourth-and-goal.

Yarwood would score again on a halfback pass from Davontee Elam. The 36-yard pass, followed by a 2-point conversion from Castoro cut the Knights' lead to 49-22 with 3:53 left to play.
