Glenbard South comes from behind to beat Fenton

Glenbard South running backs Clark Gary and Matt Loos each scored 3 touchdowns and Justin Gjerazi added one of his own as Glenbard South ruined the Fenton homecoming Friday night in Bensenville 53-22.

The game started out well for Fenton (2-5, 1-1 Metro Suburban Conference). After a 65-yard touchdown run by Gary, Fenton’s Alex Cowan threw the ball back across the field to teammate Gary Baker on the ensuing kickoff. Baker ran it up the sideline untouched for an 89-yard touchdown.

“They did a good job with the throwback,” said Glenbard South coach Jeremy Cordell. “They executed nicely on that.”

A pass from Fenton quarterback Willie Wassmann to Hector Irizzarry led to a 2-point conversion and an 8-7 lead.

A minute later Glenbard South was forced to punt. Fenton picked up the apparent dead ball at the 45-yard line and ran it back for its second touchdown. This time Wassmann completed the 2-point conversion to Zach Jakalski, giving Fenton a 16-7 lead.

“We had some hiccups on special teams,” Cordell said, “but other than that we played pretty well. We didn’t give up any big plays and our offense really started churning.”

Fenton put Baker in at quarterback, and he threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Alex Cowan, giving the Bison a 22-20 lead at the end of the first quarter.

“Baker is one of our receivers, and it gives us a different look at times, what some people would call a Wildcat,” said Fenton coach Mark Kos. “We ran it with more success last week, but it is something we can use at times.”

The rest of the game belonged to Glenbard South (4-3, 2-1). Three of the first four Glenbard South touchdowns were on long runs by Gary.

“We got some sweeps in,” Cordell said. “We ran a little bit of misdirection after we set up the perimeter. Our kids ran real hard.”

“They were the same play but just to opposite sides,” Gary said. “Basically, we ran sweeps both ways and my lead blocker, Justin Gjerazi, did a great job blocking. On the sweeps the linemen created huge holes.”

“They have a couple more caliber athletes than we do right now,” said Fenton coach Mark Kos. “We still have a good chance at the conference championship, and for our seniors and our coaches that has to be our mindset and our focus.”
