Downers Grove South has all the tools

Mark Molinari may be entering his first season as Downers Grove South’s head football coach, but he’s more than familiar with the Mustangs’ program.

He was on staff when Downers South won the Class 8A title in 2001 and, as defensive coordinator the last seven seasons, he felt the disappointment of missing the playoffs last season — the first time since 1996 the Mustangs failed to reach the postseason.

Replacing retired hall of fame coach John Belskis won’t be easy, but Molinari’s mentor left him with all the tools to be successful.

Starting right now.

“I’m very fortunate to be with a program like Downers South,” Molinari said. “We’re looking at last season as a small blip on the radar. We haven’t really talked about last season that much. More than anything we’re just making sure everyone’s doing the right things.”

Literally and figuratively, the Mustangs will make a push back to the playoffs on the strength of their offensive line. At 6-foot-5, 290 pounds sophomore Erik Swenson already boasts scholarship offers from Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame and others.

Junior Marcus Rutledge, a defensive lineman last season, will be right beside Swenson along with 6-2 tight end Joe LaCivita. Combined, they’ll bolster the running game for Alec Arvanitakis.

Junior Jordan Skach takes over at quarterback after playing defense last season. Javon Turner is back at receiver to bring balance to the offense.

“We’re going to be able to run the ball a little better with what we have up front,” Molinari said. “Jordan’s got a good grasp of the offense.”

Six starters return on defense, adding experience to all three levels of the unit. Rashaun Cowan, Mike Connolly and Ryan Taylor lead at linebacker.

As for schematic changes Molinari plans to bring to the Mustangs, don’t expect many. Downers Grove South’s storied tradition remains on track.

“We’re always going to stress character at Downers South,” he said. “It’s the same today as it was 10 years ago.”
