Dundee-Crown rolls past Elgin

Dundee-Crown football coach Vito Andriola wasn’t kidding around about this year’s backfield being the best he’s ever coached. And boy did it show.

A three-headed monster of T.J. Moss and brothers Cordero and Caleb Parson ran amok on a low-numbered Elgin squad, as they combined for 249 of the Chargers’ 272 yards rushing in a 52-12 thrashing of the Maroons in nonconference play at the D-C Bowl Saturday.

In spoiling Elgin coach Kyle Rohde’s first game as head coach, Moss led all rushers with 124 yards, scoring once on a 54-yard scamper to open up the third quarter. Caleb Parson rushed 10 times for 83 yards with 2 touchdowns and a 15-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Jeff Atherton. The other Parson brother, Cordero, rushed 6 times for 42 yards and also ran for 2 touchdowns as Dundee-Crown (1-0) amassed 272 of its 308 totals yards via the run.

“It means a lot that he said that,” Caleb Parson said of Andriola’s comments about the D-C backfield. “We can’t prove him wrong. We have to keep him to his word. We have to show everybody. “

And Andriola reclarified his backfield afterward: “I don’t lie, we’re really good. We have a good offense and they all can get the ball and whatever the defense gives us we’re going to take. They’re all different. That’s really kind of cool. I was proud of that. I thought the offensive line played good.”

It was evident on the D-C’s first series that a line of Trent Hanselman, Jeremy Marshall, Mike Utley, Brad Spandenberg, Josh Mosley and Connor Steinmetz was bolstered considerably from last year. It took just a 4-play, 42-yard drive with Cordero Parson scoring from 2-yards out to be the first of 45-straight points the Chargers racked up. The Parson brothers scored on runs of 2, 5, 13 and 13 that helped outgain Elgin 308-231. Caleb Parson was quick to point to his offensive line.

“They did a pretty good job and that’s where we won this game. They work hard and they did their job,” he said.

Hanselman, who had injured running back Cody Lane’s number taped to his wrist, was adamant about being strong in the trenches.

“We bust our (behinds) during practice very week, every day,” the right tackle said. “We just try to do our best for our backs, try to get them the biggest holes. “

Jordan Smith was Elgin’s standout, rushing for a 1-yard score and hauling in a 46-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Mike Sitter (4-for-9, 120 yards). Dontrell Gaddy rushed 10 times for 75 yards for Elgin (0-1). The Maroons were penalized 8 times for 61 yards, leaving Rohde with even more issues.

“We have to start the game off with the correct players on the field, we had some guys miss practice and be late to practice and kind of had guys thrown into different spots they weren’t ready to be,” Rohde said. “That alone set us back intensity-wise and everything.”
