Leyden aims to take flight with Pajor

Running its usual conventional offense, Leyden football coach Tom Cerasani expects the Eagles to run the ball about 60 percent of the time.

That means the ball will be in the air the other 40 percent of the time. And that should be a good thing.

"We do expect to be very strong throwing the ball this year," Cerasani said.

That's where two-year starter Tom Pajor is the major player.

Cersani said the senior quarterback has the ability to be the most prolific passer in school history.

"We will be depending on his leadership abilities, his football knowledge and abilities to make plays in important situations," said Cerasani, a former standout for Schaumburg High School.

Pajor will be taking his snaps from three-year starter Gunnar Schifferl.

"Gunnar works hard at everything he does," Cerasani said of the senior. "From the weight room to the field to the classroom, he gives 100 percent."

Other returners on offense are Alex Rose (senior tight end), John Robles (senior tailback) and Alex Lemon (senior wide receiver).

Robles is also a wide receiver and defensive back.

"John is a playmaker," Cerasani said. "He has the ability to make big plays on both sides of the ball. He will make people miss in the open field and has great speed."

Rose is also a linebacker. "Alex is a vocal leader and his teammates respond to his encouragement," the coach added. "He will be a vital part of what we do on both sides of the ball."

Returning on defense are Danny Tragarz (senior free safety), Robles (cornerback), Rose (linebacker) and Joe Ramos (senior strong safety).

"Defensively, we are an attacking unit," Cerasani said. "We expect to create turnovers and put a lot of pressure on opposing offenses."

Athleticism and commitment are the Eagles' strengths according to Cerasani, who is beginning hs 10th season directing the program.

"The kids are excited about playing football and striving to become better every day," he said.

"The conference looks wide open. We expect to compete for a conference championship. This is a good group of kids. They have strong character and that should carry them this season."
