Dundee-Crown holds off Streamwood

Dundee-Crown top running backs Caleb Parson and Malik Dunner go down with injuries.

No problem.

The Chargers, led by Kiwi Seals, Brandon Brooks and Jeff Atherton were able to overcome the injury obstacles and defeat Streamwood 41-39 in an exhilarating nonconference game in Carpentersville Friday night.

"Obviously you don't want your best running backs to go down, but we have a lot of character," said D-C coach Mike Steinhaus. "For the second straight week, Brandon Brooks came in and was our MVP. We certainly have a lot of depth at running back."

Seals was solid on both sides of the ball for the Chargers (2-0). The senior caught 9 passes for 75 yards including touchdown passes of 14 and 39 yards. He also had a key interception in the fourth quarter for the Chargers.

"Caleb and Mailk are very good players, but it is next man up for us," said Seals. "We have a lot of Charger pride."

Brooks, who came in for the injured Parson in the third quarter, bulldozed his way for 97 yards on 18 carries including a 1-yard TD run with 45 seconds left in the third quarter.

Atherton, who showed poise in the pocket all night, was 18-for-29 for 176 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Other than the two scores to Seals, Atherton tossed a 3-yard TD to Matt Michalski and a 16-yard scoring strike to Zach Thelen.

Trailing 33-21 midway through the third quarter, the Chargers answered with three-straight scores. Atherton hit Seals with a 14-yard TD, Brooks scored on a 1-yard run and Thelen's TD pass gave the Chargers a 41-33 lead with 7:54 left.

But the highflying Sabres didn't give up.

Cody Jayko caught an 11-yard pass from Max Draper with 2:02 left to make the score 41-39.

But Streamwood couldn't convert the 2-point conversion and the Chargers held on for the victory.

Streamwood got a great effort from junior running back Tae Reetz in a losing cause. The junior carried the ball 12 times for 200 yards and scored 3 times on runs of 72, 45 and 28 yards.

"My offensive line was great," said Reetz. "I couldn't have done it without them."

Draper enjoyed a great game throwing the ball. The senior was 21-for-31 for 305 yards and 3 touchdowns, two to Jayko and one to Noah Polich for 58 yards.
