Davidson, Barrington calmly top Elk Grove

Barrington's football team oozes with confidence. One of the leaders in its collective cool, calm demeanor is junior quarterback Johnny Davidson.

Davidson's pinpoint passing and timely runs helped the Broncos improve to 2-0 with a 41-13 win at Elk Grove on Friday night in a Mid-Suburban League crossover.

"We have a very confident group of football players," said Barrington coach Joe Sanchez. "Davidson was more comfortable this week. He knows he has a lot of weapons behind him that can make plays. He made good decisions out there tonight. The reason behind that is that he prepared well for this weeks game by watching film and meeting with the coaches."

Davidson rushed 8 times for 44 yards and completed 14 of 15 passes for 196 and a touchdown. He had 1 interception.

"Our offensive line was dominant," said Davidson. "Their pass-blocking was unbelievable. We were able to get the running game going and that opened up the passing game. After each touchdown I made a point of going to the offensive line and telling them what a great job they did."

Linemen Bobby Seibt, Matt Reiser, Alex Serrano, Nick Bart, and Salvodor Gurrola were the recipients of Davidson's praise.

The Broncos started off with a bang as Terry McGovern returned the opening kickoff for 86 yards and a 7-0 lead.

Burly J.T. Henderson made it 14-0 for the Broncos on a 2-yard run on the first play of the second quarter. That capped an 8-play, 64-yard drive. Davidson hit four consecutive passes to start the drive accounting for 53 yards. A 35-yard completion to Dylan Bingham (4 catches, 61 yards) was the key play.

Elk Grove (0-2) fought back. Quarterback A. J. Lorenz drove the Grenadiers 74 yards in 9 plays to score on Nicolas Quirindongo's 23-yard catch to make the score 14-7.

On the ensuing kickoff Peter Ifianayi recovered a onside kick, putting Elk Grove in business at the Barrington 37.

On fourth down from the 33, Lorenz (10-for-22, 163 yards) found Quirindongo in the flat and the senior receiver found the end zone to make the score 14-13. The conversion attempt failed.

"I was proud of the way our players came back," said Elk Grove coach Larry Calhoun. "I'm happy with our effort. I think Lorenz took some big steps tonight in becoming a good quarterback. He made some good decisions for us. He responded well in some tight situations."

Barrington bounced right back to score with 4:38 left in the half on a 20-yard run by Dumaso Mkwananz and a 31-yard pass from Davidson to Mitchell Pfeiffer (4 catches, 101 yards) with 1:55 left in the first half for a 28-13 lead.

The second half found Henderson scoring from the 1 midway through the third quarter for a 35-13 lead.

Reserve quarterback Adam Broomfield scored from the 5-yard line late in the fourth quarter.

Barrington finished with 398 yards to the Grens' 302.

"We're just taking it one game at a time," said Sanchez. "Tonight was the most important game of the season for us. Every week is big for us. What I like about this team is that they know what they have to do to be successful."

"I give a lot of credit to our scout team," said Davidson. "They prepared us well for this game. My receivers did a great job in working to get into position so I could get the ball to them. A lot of us have played together for a long time going back to grade school. I think that has helped a lot."
