Glenbard East routs East Aurora

Although Glenbard East is new to the Upstate Eight Conference, it looked right at home in all phases of the football game Friday night, defeating East Aurora 56-6 in Aurora.

Mistakes were virtually nonexistent for the Rams (3-1, 1-1 UEC Valley Division), and they set the tone from the beginning with an early offensive outpouring. The star of the game was junior quarterback Philip Abruzino, who took advantage of a porous Tomcats defense both through the air and on the ground. The Rams opened the game with 14 unanswered points, and the rout was on from there.

A 28-point second quarter, which included two rushing touchdowns from senior Rams running back Dominic Wilberton, seemed to signal the end of the night for the Tomcats (0-4, 0-2) as they could not stop a potent offense.

They could not get anything going offensively, as Tomcats quarterback Alfonso Dieppa had a night to forget. The senior quarterback completed just four passes, along with throwing an interception before going down with an injury.

Their lone score came in the second quarter by way of senior running back Nathaniel Booker on a 69-yard rush. That turned out to be the lone bright spot in an otherwise lopsided game. Although the result is not what he envisioned, Tomcats coach Kurt Becker relayed a positive message to the team.

"We talked about a lot of things, but we just have to keep working. I told them you can't quit on yourselves, and you just have to try and continue to make yourself a better football player," Becker said.

Coming off a 2-7 season in 2013, the Rams have made positive strides to get to where they are.

"It feels good. We are in a new league and it's our first conference win. Our eyes have to be on the prize, but for now we will just enjoy this win," Rams coach John Walters said.

Walters also talked about the Rams' level of focus heading into the game, which played a big role in the offensive attack.

"We didn't do anything different that we have done in the past; we are an execution-based team and just try to focus on doing what we do. They prepared this week, and were ready for a football game," he said.
