Montini wallops Leo

The Montini Broncos got back over .500 with a 56-6 thrashing of the Leo Catholic Lions on Friday in Lombard.

The Broncos (3-2) led 42-0 at halftime, executing on some big plays throughout the half. The loss is the first of the season for Leo, dropping it to (4-1).

"Terrific effort tonight, top to bottom," said Montini coach Chris Andriano. "We came out with what we wanted to do. We wanted to start fast, had a lot of big plays. Defensively, I thought we played well. Up front we played well on both sides of the ball."

At the helm of the Montini big plays was quarterback Charles Norgle III.

At the time of the halftime whistle, the senior was 10 of 13 with 285 yards and 5 touchdowns. He was precise, efficient, calm in the pocket and shredded the Leo secondary on 2 of his 5 touchdown passes.

"It was nice, especially after the pass couple weeks running the gauntlet," Norgle said. "It was nice coming out at halftime, especially because we get the (second string) work. They practice so hard day in and day out and I was happy to do it for them."

It was the kind of night Andriano had planned out for Norgle.

"He was on the money," Andriano said. "It was what we were expecting from him now. He's improved and getting better every week now. We're just trying to keep pointing it in the right direction."

On the receiving end of Norgle's passes, were Leon Thornton III, Tyler Millikan, Patrick Maloney and Prince Walker, who had to work for his 2 touchdowns and 136 receiving yards.

Walker added a 21-yard touchdown run while backup QB Justin Blake had a 57-yard TD run of his own. James Pendergast also had a 35-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

When the Leo offense got in a rhythm it got going, but a couple key pass drops in the first quarter really hurt. Even after capping off a 79-yard drive at the end of the second quarter, the Lions ran out of time after a quarterback keeper was held at the goal line.

They got on the scoreboard in the third quarter when a short Latrell Giles pass found Saheed Adewole. Adewole did well, taking it 71 yards to the end zone.

"They're actually a pretty good 1A school," Andriano said. "They just don't have enough guys."
