Metea Valley celebrates homecoming win

Metea Valley inched closer to the playoffs with a commanding 48-6 homecoming victory over East Aurora.

Powered by the arm of senior quarterback Kyle Mooney, the Mustangs drove relentlessly down the field with every opportunity in the Upstate Eight Conference Valley Division game, showing they are ready for a potential playoff appearance. For now, Mustangs coach Ben Kleinhans is making sure they are keeping their eyes on the task at hand with two games yet to play.

"It should be pretty simple to keep them focused. They know their goal is right there. We have four wins with two weeks left, and we're going for six wins. Five wins gets you a winning season, but a sixth win guarantees you a spot in the playoffs," Kleinhans said.

"We don't want to leave anything to chance. We want to get that sixth win and we feel we are a good enough team to get six wins. These guys don't need any extra motivation, but they will be ready to go."

Mooney connected with wide receiver Kris King for two touchdowns, but King put the focus on the team moving forward. Metea Valley (4-3, 3-2) continues its quest to make the playoffs next week at Glenbard East.

"It's our first homecoming win, so this will get us prepared going into next week as we push toward the playoffs," King said.

East Aurora (0-7, 0-5) did not have an answer for the Mustangs' attack, as the Tomcats struggled all night to get anything going. The running game picked up slightly in the second half and junior running back Amari Cummings credited the offensive line with the revival.

"Our line did a better job in the second half. We really tried to step our game up to at least try and make a comeback and put some points up on the board," Cummings said.

Even though the Tomcats will miss the playoffs and will have to regroup for next season, the junior running back had some wise words regarding the attitude of the team going into next year.

"The way this season has gone has taught us to keep our heads up, and we obviously want to have a better season than this year. Team leadership will be key, and just working real hard consistently throughout the season," Cummings said.
