McHenry trips up Dundee-Crown in shootout

Dundee-Crown's defense simply couldn't contain McHenry's running attack.

The Warriors compiled 460 yards on the ground in posting a 57-42 win over Dundee-Crown in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division action in Carpentersville Friday night.

"Our running game was amazing tonight," said McHenry coach Dave D'Angelo, "We wanted to set the tone early and pound the ball with the run. We faced adversity after last week's loss to Cary-Grove. The kids could have packed it in. I am very proud of them."

The Warriors (3-4, 1-2) set the tone on the first play of scrimmage as Jack Machometa raced around the D-C offense for 65 yards and a touchdown with only 19 seconds elapsed in the game.

McHenry, which led 29-8 late in the first quarter, got 2 more touchdown runs of 5 and 2 yards from Machometa and a 8-yard run from Alec Glauser, who had 225 yards rushing and 3 scores for the evening.

D-C, which managed 493 yards of total offense, didn't quit and rallied to tie the game at 36 as Jeff Atherton threw a 9-yard touchdown strike to senior tight end Alonzo Alvarado and the two hooked up for the 2-point conversion with 8:28 left in the third quarter.

The Warriors stole the momentum back as on the first play from scrimmage after the D-C score as Glauser rambled 80 yards to give the Warriors the lead for good at 43-36 with 8:06 left in the game.

The Chargers (3-4, 0-3) wasted an outstanding effort from senior running back Malik Dunner, who is headed to Ball State next season. Dunner toted the ball 31 times for 205 yards and scored on runs of 6 and 21 yards.

The Chargers racked up 31 first downs in the game.

"The highlight for the team was our offense," said Dundee-Crown assistant coach Matt Gehrig, "They really fought hard. Malik had a great game. He showed a lot of heart and determination."

D-C, which rushed the ball 50 times for 305 yards, got 66 yards on 13 rushes from Caleb Parson. Parson scored twice on runs of 2 and 11 yards.

Atherton completed 15-of-26 passes for 188 yards with 2 interceptions and 2 touchdowns, both to Alvarado, who led the D-C receivers with 7 catches for 81 yards. Jim Welzien snared 3 catches for 37 yards.

McHenry complimented a dominant running game with a solid passing game. Quarterback Mike Briscoe was 5-for-8 for 85 yards including an 18-yard TD to Scott Marunde.
