Glenbard South falls to Lake Forest

Glenbard South got the good start it wanted in Saturday's Class 6A second-round playoff game.

Sustaining that start was another matter.

Lake Forest shook off a two-touchdown deficit, responding with 35 unanswered points that ultimately led to a 42-28 Class 6A second-round defeat of visiting Glenbard South. The loss ended the Raiders' eight-game winning streak and a season that included a Metro Suburban West championship.

"We got up fast. We just couldn't find a way to finish," Glenbard South coach Jeremy Cordell said. "They really took it to us after we went up 14-0. They ran the ball well and got the edges. We battled, though, until the end."

Glenbard South (8-3) came out like gangbusters on the opening drive when it marched 84 yards in 8 plays, a drive that was capped by junior quarterback Kyle Carli's 15-yard toss to the outstretched arms of junior wideout Billy Bair in the corner of the end zone.

Lake Forest then got the ball, but a fake punt was snuffed out and Glenbard South took advantage. The Raiders promptly punched in their second score when senior running back Jack Curtis rumbled in from 22 yards out with 4:16 left in the opening act.

"I coached poorly in the beginning of the game with the fake punt," said Lake Forest coach Chuck Spagnoli, whose 13th-seeded Scouts improved to 8-3 and play top-seeded Nazareth Academy next weekend in the quarterfinals. "But the guys stayed calm and focused and thankfully they bailed us out."

Running the ball well is what Lake Forest did from that point on as the 14-0 advantage quickly evaporated. Senior running back Wesley Janeck left Raiders defenders in his wake when he sprinted 48 yards down the right sideline for the Scouts' first score with 2:25 left in the first. Senior wideout Matthew Hargitt then hauled in a 46-yard pass from junior quarterback Daniel Corollo with 20 seconds left and it was game on as the Scouts drew even.

Lake Forest continued a steady dose of rushing mixed in with a big play here and there in staking to a 21-14 halftime advantage. Three minutes into the second quarter, a big hit by junior linebacker Francis Nicholson caused a fumble that was recovered by sophomore linebacker Cal Wonham. Lake Forest capitalized and took the lead for good on the first play from scrimmage when Hargitt caught a 30-yard pass from Carollo to make it 21-14 at halftime.

Lake Forest added two more scores early in the third and fourth quarters to make it 35-14. Janeck dashed in from a yard out two minutes in to the third, and Michael Christensen's 8-yard scoring catch from Carollo two minutes into the fourth put Lake Forest ahead 35-14.

Glenbard South didn't go away, though, scoring two late touchdowns to close to within 35-28. Curtis was responsible for both, a 17- and then a 57-yard pass from Carli. Lake Forest put the exclamation point on the game by recovering the ensuing onside kick. One play later, Janeck had his third score of the game, this time on a 57-yard run.
