Sigmund chosen to lead Elk Grove football program

Elk Grove has named John Sigmund as its new football head coach.

Sigmund has spent the last 11 seasons at Glenbard West, including the last eight as offensive coordinator as the Hilltoppers were a postseason regular. Glenbard West has qualified for the playoff eight straight years and has appeared in two championship games in that span, winning a Class 7A state title in 2012 and finishing as runner-up in 2009.

Sigmund, a Pennsylvania native, played tight end collegiately at Wisconsin. He will teach Physical Education at Elk Grove in addition to leading the football program.

"Mr. Sigmund has earned enormous praise as a phenomenal educator and an outstanding influence on young people," Elk Grove Principal Paul Kelly said. "I cannot wait to work with him as he leads our student-athletes on the field and in the classroom."

Sigmund and his wife Jessyca live in Streamwood and have a 1-year-old son, Jack.

"My family and I are extremely excited about joining the Elk Grove community," said Sigmund. "I look forward to building upon the rich and proud traditions that have been established here at Elk Grove High School."

Sigmund replaces Larry Calhoun, who resigned after three years in the position and was recently named Mundelein's coach.

"John Sigmund has an excellent track record as a teacher and coach," said Jon Rowley, Elk Grove's boys athletic director. "He will relate very well with our student-athletes and community."

"The EG Nation has been patiently waiting to meet their new coach," said Bob Murphy, Elk Grove Assistant Principal for Student Activities. "After conversations with several qualified candidates, coach Sigmund separated himself from the rest by clearly demonstrating that he is the ideal fit for Elk Grove High School. I can't wait for our students and community to get to know him."
