Stevenson High School fans gather to celebrate state boys basketball title

Students, staffers and parents packed Stevenson High School's Forum space Thursday morning to celebrate the boys basketball team's recent state title.

Wearing commemorative state-champ T-shirts, the athletes were introduced to an appreciative crowd of several hundred people. Parents shot videos and photographs with cellphones as the teens descended a staircase to the fans waiting below.

The team's victory over Normal in the Class 4A final on Saturday is the school's third athletic championship this year. The football team won a trophy, too, and the school seized the girls tennis doubles championship.

“We could not have asked for a better 50th anniversary for this school,” Principal Troy Gobble told the crowd. “It has been just a spectacular year.”

Here's a look at the basketball team's accomplishments, by the numbers.

• 30: Victories this season

• 2,682: Career points scored by senior guard Jalen Brunson, a Lake County record.

• 332: Career victories for Coach Pat Ambrose

• 1: Boys basketball titles in Stevenson history

• 14: State titles for Stevenson High in IHSA team sports

• 3: Times an Illinois high school has one boys basketball and football state titles in the same year
