Carmel's Foster earns spot in U.S. Army football showcase

Carmel Catholic offensive lineman Sean Foster is one of six Illinois' top incoming senior football players who have been nominated to play in the 2016 U.S. Army all-American Bowl.

Foster will have the chance to showcase his talent on Saturday, Jan. 9, 2016, in the annual East vs. West matchup, televised live on NBC.

Foster recently committed to Minnesota.

"The U.S. Army all-American Bowl is a unique event designed to showcase and recognize the talents of America's youth while celebrating the team that makes a difference every day for the Nation - the U.S. Army," said Mark S. Davis, deputy assistant secretary of the Army for marketing. "This nomination recognizes the versatility and adaptability the athletes possess both on and off the field; qualities they share with U.S. Army Soldiers. We look forward to the 2016 Army all-American Bowl program that includes more than 200 events across the country and culminates in San Antonio during game week."

A list of the nominees can be accessed at www.usarmyallamericanbowl.com.

The athletes were nominated by the U.S. Army all-American Bowl Selection Committee, which consists of All American Games, 247Sports, and XOS Digital, and All American Games' network of regional coaches throughout the country.

Of the 400 nominees, 90 will be ultimately selected and invited to the U.S. Army all-American Bowl.

The next step for the nominees occurs in September, when the U.S. Army all-American Bowl Selection Tour begins.

Player finalists along with United States Army all-American Marching Band musicians will be announced nationwide throughout the fall.

The selection tour ends in early December.

Andrew Luck, Patrick Peterson and Jamaal Charles made their national debuts as U.S. Army All-Americans.

A total of seven U.S. Army all-American Bowl alumni were drafted in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft. The 2015 U.S. Army all-American Bowl drew a crowd of 35,687 to the Alamodome.

Women's track and field

Concordia University-Chicago freshman Chelsee Wilson (Grayslake North) is headed to the NCAA Division III track and field nationals at St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY.

The sprinter will represent the university and the Cougar track and field team in the 200-meter dash.

Her time of 24.80 seconds ranks her 18th nationally. The top 22 in each event qualify for the nationals.

Wilson's impact on CUC's program has been felt since her first competition back in January.

She has set new individual school records in the 60 and 200-meter dashes (indoors) and the 100 and 200-meter dashes (outdoors).

In addition, Wilson was a member of the 4 x 100-meter and 4 x 400-meter relay teams that set new school records in April.

"It's been exciting to see Chelsee break at least seven records in her first year - in some cases, setting records multiple times in a single event," said CUC head track and field coach Phil Kopinski in a school release. "But I feel that her greater accomplishment is the confidence that she has brought to the group (of sprinters) and the team as a whole."

Lacrosse

Augustana midfielder Gina Filippo (Libertyville) wrapped up her career as a Viking. Her senior class, the first in program history, compiled a record of 70-10 (.875).

The Vikings captured three undefeated conference titles and made three NCAA Division III Tournament appearances in their first four years of intercollegiate competition.

They were 19-2 this season and 6-0 in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin.

Vikings junior Emily Handrahan (Lake Zurich) was second on the team with 49 assists, an average of 2.33 per game which ranks 28th in the nation.

Baseball

Carthage junior first baseman/pitcher Jared Helmich (Grant) batted .354 with 11 doubles, 6 home runs and 33 RBI.

He had a 4-1 pitching record, a 2.21 earned run average and was named "d3baseball.com" third-team All-America.

Hlemich was also named first-team All-Central Region by both the American Baseball Coaches Association and D3baseball.com.

Football officials

Officiating classes for high school and youth football are forming now to fill the shortage. There are no prerequisites. You can earn your IHSA officials license. The class is free. Training covers rule interpretation, penalty enforcement and positioning. Completion of this class gives you the opportunity to work games this upcoming season. The eight-week course of training begins June 23 (Tuesdays from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.). Classes are held at Grayslake Central High School, Forest View Educational Center in Arlington Heights, Lisle and Bremen High School in Midlothian. Major Arena soccer

The Chicago Mustangs, proud members of the Major Arena Soccer League (www.MASLSoccer.com), have developed a unique media partnership with Barrington High School's BHS-TV.

The Mustangs and BHS-TV have linked up to give students the opportunity to experience working in sports media while helping to create and develop different types of content to be featured across all of the Mustangs' social media platforms.

Students will also have a chance to shadow members of Chicago's media department and learn about the day-to-day operations of the department.

"The students in the Barrington High School video program are excited to join forces with the Chicago Mustangs," BHS-TV supervisor Jeff Doles said. "The partnership will create unique opportunities and learning experiences for the students where they will create videos and graphics for a professional sports team."
