Benet blasts past St. Laurence

Benet's high-powered hurry-up offense gave St. Laurence all it could handle in a 42-21 Redwings football win Friday night in Burbank.

Led by junior quarterback Jack Snzajder's 5 touchdown passes, the Redwings took what the Vikings gave them en route to 35 first-half points. The defense also recorded sacks on each of St. Laurence's first three passes.

"We played really well in all three phases tonight," said Benet coach Pat New. "We've got some athletes and some guys who can make plays; just good overall football players."

Benet running backs Martin Dosen and Colin Hall both carried the football a fair amount in part to the early lead. The two combined for 174 yards on 36 carries.

The St. Laurence offense was much more effective in the second half behind a dual rushing attack of quarterback Alex Martinez and running back Daniel Schadt. Martinez was replaced by junior quarterback Romello Washington late in the fourth quarter.

"We tried subbing a lot, and started turning the ball over down in their territory," New said. "Mentally, when you go back in a game, it's a tough deal. Part of that's my fault, but we're glad to get the win."

The Redwings have won two of the three meetings between these two schools. The previous two came in 1996 and 1997.
