Barrington impresses against Glenbrook South

Barrington's loss to Palatine last Oct. 17 prevented the Broncos from winning the conference title, and a defeat to Glenbard West on Nov. 15 that ended their season in the Class 8A state quarterfinals for the second consecutive year, has left the Broncos wanting more.

"In the past two years, we ended in the quarters, and it definitely motivated us," Barrington quarterback Johnny Davidson said. "The past two years we didn't win conference and this year we want to do it and win conference. That's obviously our first goal - and going on from there. But the guys have been working hard since we started in June to get where we are tonight, so we have got to just keep working as hard as we can."

Barrington began its quest to take last season's performance one step further, as the Broncos upended Glenbrook South 50-23 in Glenview on Friday night in the season opener for both teams.

A 41-yard Damian Dembicki field goal as the halftime horn sounded gave the Broncos a 23-20 lead and they did not look back from there. Barrington outscored the Titans, 27-3 in the second half.

A Nate King 5-yard touchdown run and Dembecki extra point extended Barrington's advantage to 30-20 with 10:21 remaining in the third quarter.

Another King touchdown scamper, this time of the 24-yard variety, coupled with an additional Dembecki extra point further upped the Broncos' lead to 37-20 with 3:29 left in the third period.

Glenbrook South countered with its lone score of the second half with a 21-yard Henry Tarbox field goal to cut the Titans' deficit to 37-23 with 11:51 remaining in the contest.

The Broncos' first of two scores in the fourth quarter came on a 21-yard touchdown pass from Davidson to wide receiver Josh Babicz, coupled with a missed extra point, to extend the Broncos' lead to 43-23.

"We had a great receiving corps last year," Barrington senior wide receiver Jake Zyzda said. "As a junior who saw time on the field, you've got to pay your dues and just learn from them. Coming into senior year, it's the time to shine now and help the younger kids through the offense and keep them going if they ever make a mistake and teach them and keep that going throughout the season."

Barrington concluded the evening's scoring with a 6-yard rushing touchdown by Davidson and a successful extra point with 5:12 left in the game to account for the 50-23 final score in favor of Barrington.

"(Last year) was a talented group," Barrington coach Joe Sanchez said. "That's as talented as a group you'll ever see and we knew the kids coming back might not look the same, but we've got kids that can make plays."

The Broncos travel to Hersey next Friday for its first of two crossover games against Mid Suburban East foes.
