Leyden routs Fenton

Fenton showed the effect of losing 22 seniors from last year's team in a 42-7 football loss to Leyden in the teams' season opener on Friday in Bensenville.

David DeMarais scored 3 touchdowns in the first half and ran for 136 yards on 14 carries to pace the Eagles.

"Disappointing," said Bison coach Mark Kos, "but we had a lot of baptism by fire for a lot of young kids who don't understand what it means to be a varsity football player, the speed of a varsity football game and the physicality of a varsity football game.

"We got to do a better job as coaches in practice. We got to continue to push these players and make them better football players because they are capable of it. No doubt about it. I think a lot of them got their eyes opened today. We got a lot of youth and inexperience and it showed tonight."

The Bison defense couldn't stop the Eagles (1-0), who scored on its first five possessions to put the game out of reach.

Two key interceptions by Eagles' Alan Jaffray and Dominic Fredrickson stopped any Bison attempt to score in the first half. Only Eric Lonergan could break through the Eagles' defense with 63 yards on 12 carries including runs of 19 and 18 yards.

But the Bison (0-1) couldn't hold DeMarais in check. The senior running back broke through for a 40-yard touchdown run on the Eagles' first possession and ran for scores of 2 and 17 yards in the first half.

Leyden coach Tom Cerasini was happy to see his team bouncing back from a disappointing 2-7 record last year.

"We're really happy the way the team started," Cerasini said. "We have a lot of juniors playing and they answered the bell. (David) DeMarais was awesome. He really worked hard and its paid off. He really looked good."

Eagles quarterback Michael Wilms scored a touchdown on a 1-yard run and flipped a 19-yard pass to Joshua Cubon. Jalen Moore ran back the second-half kickoff 90 yards to give the Eagles a 42-0 lead.

Bison running back Greg Cazares scored on a 5-yard pass from quarterback Corey Hausen in the third quarter to close out the scoring.

"It was tough playing behind an inexperienced team," Lonergan said. "They're a little young this year. We kept our heads up and just turn this into a learning experience."
