Jacobs (1-0) at St. Charles East (0-1)

Nonconference

Game time: 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Last week: Jacobs 26, Prospect 24; South Elgin 28, St. Charles East 6

Last year: Jacobs 49, St. Charles East 20

Outlook: Jacobs looks to start 2-0 for the first time since 2012, while the Saints aim to break into the win column in their home opener.

St. Charles East debuted a triple option offense last week, directed by quarterback Zach Mitchell.

The 6-foot-1 junior kept 14 times for 66 yards and a touchdown. The Saints attempted only 5 passes. The featured ball carrier against South Elgin was fullback Cam Canales. He gained 54 yards on 13 carries before leaving the game with a first-half injury. He did not return and remained "day-to-day" as of Wednesday, according to coach Bryce Farquhar. The Saints will face a Jacobs defense that against Prospect allowed 263 rushing yards in 53 attempts (5-yard avg.). Jacobs faces the triple option every year against rival Cary-Grove.

"Jacobs has seen it, so we know that we have to be on our game," Farquhar said,"but we're comfortable with our offense and we'll get better at what we do." The Golden Eagles last week rallied for 12 points in the final 1:14 to knock off Prospect.

Junior quarterback Chris Katrenick, who has an offer from Virginia, completed 17 of 22 attempts for 207 yards. He threw for 2 late touchdowns, ran for another and was intercepted once. "Chris did a real good job reading the defense except one or two plays and we caught the ball well," Jacobs coach Bill Mitz said. "The biggest thing we have to improve is our blocking and our tackling."

Next week: Elgin at St. Charles East; Rock Island at Jacobs
