Grant can't match Glenbrook North

Grant's football team played with heavy hearts Friday night in light of the passing of Fox Lake police officer Lt. Charlie Joe Gliniewicz earlier in the week.

The Bulldogs put up a good fight but couldn't overcome a tough Glenbrook North team, which won the nonconference game 30-0.

“We practiced only one time,” Grant coach Vito Andriola said. “It was a tough week. We were trying to make our program concentrate on football. We talk about dealing with adversity all the time — about how to handle things. This is kind of our sanctuary. So we can kind of forget about things.

“The kids were great in school about everything,” Andriola added. “It wasn't easy. We were locked down for 6 1/2 hours, and that affects you no matter what. I really don't think it had anything to do with the football game.”

Glenbrook North (2-0) scored on its first possession after its defense stopped Grant's offense.

Spartans running back John Clark (14 carries, 177 yards and 3 touchdowns) broke loose for a 76-yard TD run on the first play.

“I really think that was big for us,” Glenbrook North coach Bob Pieper said. “We told our kids that we knew that there was going to be a lot of emotion up here. It was a tough situation for everyone in this community. We knew at the beginning we had to get our stuff together and play football for 48 minutes. We wanted to take the emotion out of it for everybody, and a score usually helps.”

The Spartans added another Clark TD from 1 yard out with 10:48 left in the second quarter, and Tommy Gertner added a 22-yard field goal with 3:31 left that made the score 17-0 at the break.

Clark scampered for 11 yard for his third score with 8:28 left in the third quarter, increasing the lead to 23-0.

The Bulldogs put together one of their longest drives, going 16 plays before stalling at the Glenbrook North 23-yard line on downs. That drive lasted 8 minutes and 40 seconds.

Glenbrook North quarterback Nick Karis (9 carries, 103 yards) scored on a 9-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Grant's Isaac Jamie rushed for 26 carries for 112 yards.

“We don't play fast and we have to get our program to play fast,” Andriola said. “It's hard for them to play fast. We just keep talking about it.”

Barrington 46, Hersey 7: Last season, it was running back by committee for Barrington.

This year, it's a monarchy.

Nate King scored 4 touchdowns and rushed for 109 yards as Barrington crowned host Hersey 46-7 on Friday in Arlington Heights in a Mid-Suburban League football divisional crossover.

King showed why he has helped Barrington rule from the ground this year, to go with their versatile aerial attack. King, a stout 5-foot-5, 200-pound senior, was a force in the backfield.

“It was a big transition for me,” said King, who had over 200 yards rushing last week against Glenbrook South. “I learned a lot from the running backs ahead of me. I am ready for it. It is a tribute to our linemen.”

“King has been running hard,” Barrington coach Joe Sanchez said. “He has been waiting for his opportunity the last two years. He has been in a loaded backfield, and he is coming out hungry now.”

Running behind one an offensive line that features Division I prospects Nick Bart and Alex Serrano alongside J.T. Snyder, John Stefan and Mark Bach, Barrington rolled up 353 yards of offense in the first half and finished with 531 yards.

King capped 3 long touchdown drives with scoring runs of 6, 4 and 2 yards as Barrington led 19-0 early in the second quarter. And when King went to the bench for a breather, Logan Moews had a 56-yard scoring burst to make it 25-0 with 4:45 left in the first half.

Hersey (1-1) mounted its only scoring drive of the day just before the end of the half when Tommy Jackson connected with Zach Cooper on a 31-yard touchdown pass to make it 25-7 at the half.
