Cary-Grove rolls over Lake Zurich

Opponents of Cary-Grove in 2015 beware - the Trojans can throw the football.

Senior quarterback JP Sullivan was a perfect 6-for-6 for 134 yards and he threw 2 touchdown passes as the Trojans moved to 2-0 with a 30-15 win over Lake Zurich in nonconference action at Cary-Grove's Al Bohrer Field Friday night.

"I took what the defense gave us," said Sullivan, a backup to Jason Gregoire the past two seasons. "We had some calls and I audibled on a couple of the passes. The guys ran great routes and got open. We made way too many mistakes on offense last week and made great improvements this week."

Sullivan's first TD strike came with 5:05 left in the first half on a 29-yard pass to Oscar Rivera. Collin Walsh's extra point kick was good and the Trojans had seized the lead for good at 14-7.

Sullivan's second scoring pass came right before the end of the first half as he hooked up with Ryan Magel for a 15 yard score with 33.9 seconds left before intermission. Walsh's kick was good and the Trojans led 21-7 at intermission.

Kyle Pressley, who had a 46-yard reception, corralled 3 passes for 78 yards. Jimmy Freskos also grabbed a pass for 12 yards.

"We always game plan the passing game," said Cary-Grove coach Brad Seaburg. "JP did a great job of reading the defense and he really threw the ball well."

Walsh also added a 27-yard field goal in the third quarter.

The Trojans' machine-like running game was also operating on all cylinders.

Tyler Pennington ground out 135 yards on 28 carries. Magel ran 9 times for 79 yards and scored on a 2-yard TD run and Pressley toted the pigskin 5 times for 39 yards and a 13-yard score. The Trojans, who compiled 27 first downs, ran 51 times for 261 yards for 395 yards of total offense.

Lake Zurich (0-2), which was hindered by 2 lost fumbles and only 42 yards rushing, did manage 187 yards passing.

Senior quarterback Joey Lindstrom completed 15-of-21 passes and threw for 2 TDs, a 33-yard score to Kyle Roth and a 27-yarder to Pete Baldacciini.

"We are very young and inexperienced and not good enough to make mistakes and win," said Lake Zurich coach Dave Proffitt. "We really moved the ball the first couple of drives but fumbles hurt us. Cary-Grove got the big play on us."
