Hampshire knocks off Urbana

Hampshire won an old-fashioned shootout Friday night.

Jacob Vincent passed for 308 yards and 4 touchdowns in just 3 quarters. Backup Connor Burke threw for 2 more, and Jeremy Curran ran for a pair of scores as the Whip-Purs celebrated homecoming by blasting visiting Urbana, 58-33, in nonconference action.

Hampshire led just 27-20 at halftime, but broke the game open with a pair of third-quarter scores. The Whips scored on their first possession of the second half on a 14-yard toss from Vincent to Zavier Bennett. It was Bennett's second scoring catch of the night.

But the momentum really turned on the following possession. The Tigers punted, and one of their gunners leveled the returner before he had a chance to make the catch. The Urbana player was ejected and the Tigers assessed a 15-yard penalty. An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the Urbana bench added another 15 yards, leaving the Whips with just 25 yards to cover. It took them 8 plays, with Nick Seliga bowling over from the 1. That made it 39-20 midway through the third quarter.

The Whips racked up 523 total yards and 28 first downs.

Urbana quarterback Raekwon Caldwell kept the Tigers in the game with some long completions. He completed just 7 of 18 passes, but they covered 241 yards. He threw scoring passes of 77 yards to Jaimin Carter and 63 yards to Jaleen Jones.

Jared Lund carried 28 times for 65 yards for Hampshire. Bennett finished with 8 catches for 138 yards.

The teams traded scores in the first quarter, which ended with the teams tied at 14. Hampshire then took a 27-14 lead, with Vincent throwing scoring strikes of 13 yards to Jake Manning on a screen and 57 yards to Bennett on a catch-and-run.

Hampshire continued to pour it on in the fourth quarter, scoring 3 more times on Curran's second TD run and scoring catches by Kyle Homa and Daniel Tuzak from Burke.
