Addison Trail can't stay with Hinsdale South

In a showdown between conference title contenders, Hinsdale South's football team definitely looked the part.

It's a part the Hornets believe they were destined to play this season.

They dominated Addison Trail 42-14 in Friday's West Suburban Gold game in Darien, knocking the defending champion off the pace while keeping the Hornets on track for their first Gold title since 2005.

"We know we've always got to be on top of our game," said Hornets quarterback Sean McCormack. "We need to just play the way we play, and I feel like we're back to where we're supposed to be."

Hinsdale South (4-2, 3-1) - in its second straight win since a disappointing Week 4 loss to Willowbrook - smacked the Blazers (3-3, 2-2) with two key bursts in the first half.

The Hornets led 14-0 in the first quarter after a pair of McCormack touchdown passes to Robert Hall. Then Marcus Curry scored on 2 touchdown runs late in the second quarter as they built a 28-7 halftime lead.

When Jon Gorney returned an interception for a touchdown on Addison Trail's opening possession of the second half, Hinsdale South never looked back.

"What we always try to do is strike fast," Curry said. "Coach always talks about being the first one to set the tone. Don't be the punching bag."

Addison Trail tried to stay close, pulling within 14-7 midway through the second quarter when six straight Mike Hundley runs led to a 3-yard touchdown run by Nick D'Ambrose.

The half ended badly for the Blazers and not just because of the 2 scoring runs by Curry, who rushed for 86 yards on 17 carries. Quarterback Ryan Zygowicz went down with an injury and missed the entire second half.

Backup Bobby Daniels threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Stevan Jones, but the Blazers struggled sustaining drives. Hundley worked hard for his 137 yards on 28 carries.

"You've got to play 48 minutes," said Addison Trail coach Paul Parpet Jr. "They jumped on us 14-0 and you can't afford to get down 14-0. It's a hole you've got to dig out of."

McCormack completed 13 of 23 passes for 217 yards and 3 touchdowns including a 50-yard fourth-quarter pass to Ravon Johnson to close the scoring.

Victories over Leyden and Morton in their final two Gold games would clinch the Hornets at least a share of the conference title.

"We truly feel that we're the only team that can beat us," said Hinsdale South coach Mike Barry. "If we play four quarters and we execute, we'll be fine."
