Week 7, East Suburban Catholic: Benet hopes to cool off Carmel

Benet Redwings (4-2, 2-2) at Carmel Corsairs (3-3, 3-1)When: 7:30 p.m., today

Last week: Benet lost to Nazareth, 33-0; Carmel def. St. Viator, 21-7.

Skinny: Carmel has recovered nicely from its 0-3 start by winning its last three games, over Marian, St. Patrick and St. Viator. In their wins, the Corsairs are averaging 33.7 points per game and allowing just 16 points per game. In the losses, they were scoring just 11.7 points per game and allowing 36.7points per game … Running back Rondel Jamison continues to stay hot. Last week, he rushed for 190 yards on 26 carries. He also scored all 3 of Carmel's touchdowns, including long runs of 48 and 61 yards…The Corsairs will have to do without tight end Noah Turner for the rest of the season. The North Carolina recruit has a stress fracture in his left foot…Benet used three quarterbacks last week as starter Jack Sznajder was sacked and left the game with back spasms; Coach Pat New believes he'll be ready to play. The Redwings managed just 63 total yards of offense against Nazareth.

Marian Central (4-2, 2-2) at St. Viator (1-5, 0-4)When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Last year: St. Viator 49, Marian Central 32

Outlook: St. Viator dropped its fourth consecutive game last week, and the Lions were officially eliminated from postseason play. But the St. Viator defense, which had struggled the previous 3 weeks, came to life last week. The Lions allowed 21 points and forced 3 turnovers in the process. But the St. Viator offense struggled, turning the ball over 4 times before scoring a late touchdown. Tight end Cole Kmet, who verbally committed to Notre Dame last week, still figures to be a key offensively. Marian Central, which joined the ESCC last year, has lost two straight.
