Wheaton Academy rolls past Fenton

Wheaton Academy cruised past Fenton 41-0 in a Metro Suburban West football game on Friday in Bensenville.

Chase Martin scored 2 touchdowns and quarterback David Thrasher connected with Luke Manske for 2 touchdowns to lead the Wheaton Academy attack.

"They were an incredibly physical team," Thrasher said. "I got to give them credit for that. They're not a bad football team at all. I thank my offensive line for giving me a bunch of time and my wide receivers did a terrific job of getting off the ball. We had some good routes in the game plan and our wide receivers just executed."

The Warriors (5-3, 1-3) got off to a good start when Harrison Taylor ran back the opening kickoff for 79 yards and a touchdown.

"The ball bounced one time and I got it, saw a lane and took it right to the end zone," Taylor said. "It felt great. It really brought us together as a team. It started the game off right. We finished it with that mentality. It was a hard-fought game."

In addition to the Martin and Manske touchdowns, Nori Kasai recovered a Bison fumble in the Bison end zone for a touchdown. The Warriors took a 41-0 lead into the half and had a running clock in the second half.

"We read our keys and did what we were supposed to do and we ended coming out on top," Martin said.

The Bison (2-6, 0-4) could only gain 141 yards for the game and had 6 fumbles, losing 3. The team lost two quarterbacks this season, including senior starter Corey Hausen, forcing sophomore quarterback D.J. Kelly into action. Kelly was 2 for 5 for 52 yards.

"This was (Kelly's) first varsity start," said Bison coach Mark Kos. "He was thrown into the fire this week in practice. He's giving what he can right now."

The win was the fifth for the Warriors and makes the team eligible for the IHSA playoffs. The Warriors' goal is to get to six wins and not let a playoff berth be determined by playoff points.

"We played three tough opponents, all ranked very well. I thought we played them tough," said Warriors coach Brad Thornton. "I was real proud of our guys for coming off those games for not getting down and finishing our season strong."

"We're got a tough game against Aurora Central Catholic next week. I'm confident our guys will be ready for it."

The Bison are out of the playoffs and head to IC Catholic Prep to close out its disappointing season.

"You have to play for pride at this point," Kos said.
