Davidson, Barrington deliver against Fremd

It was Johnny football time again at Barrington.

Quarterback Johnny Davidson passed for a career-high and school-record 417 yards and 5 touchdowns. He also ran for another touchdown as Barrington rolled past Fremd 49-28 Friday. With the win, the Broncos remained atop the Mid Suburban West standings alongside Palatine.

Davidson was surgical in cutting up a Fremd defense that was missing three starters in the defensive backfield and had another limited with his play due to an injury. And after the Broncos were knocked off last week against Palatine, Davidson attacked the next available foe with a vengeance.

"That was a lot of fun out there," said Davidson, who was 21-of-28 passing and rushed for 53 yards. "A lot of those went to No. 11 (Jake Zyzda). He was great out there and our line did a phenomenal job as well."

Zyzda was on the receiving end of 4 of Davidson's scoring tosses. Zyzda, who had 10 catches for 243 yards, caught TD passes of 37, 24, 45 and 37 yards.

"The goal is to score every time you touch it," said Zyzda, whose 4 TD's set a school record. "This team means the world to me. And to get the record against Fremd means even more."

Barrington coach Joe Sanchez liked the way his team bounced back.

"I was really proud the way our kids responded after a tough loss last week," Sanchez said. "We challenged our guys this week and had a great week of practice. Our guys were really focused and wanted to show what we are about."

Thanks to play of Davidson and Zyzda along with the receiving of Josh Babicz, who had 6 catches for 129 years, Barrington piled up 534 yards of offense.

"They all did a great job out there," Sanchez said. "I liked what I saw out of our offense."

Barrington (7-1, 3-1) remained tied with Palatine in the MSL West at 3-1. Conant dropped out of the lead with a loss at Hoffman Estates.

Barrington plays Hoffman Estates next week, while Conant and Palatine square off in the final game of the regular season.

Davidson was nearly perfect in the first half on Friday, throwing for 275 yards on 14-of-18, with 3 of those going for touchdowns.

After Davidson gave the Barrington a 7-0 lead on a 37-yard pop pass to Zyzda, Fremd showed some early life.

The Vikings (5-3, 1-3) scored a pair of touchdowns to take a 14-7 lead. Tom Josten connected with Kenny Lyke on a 43-yard touchdown pass and Alex Jacobs busted off a 24-yard run as Fremd began to move the ball.

But it was all Davidson and Barrington from there as the Broncos scored 28 unanswered points to close out the half.

Davidson and Zyzda hooked again a couple of more times as Barrington opened up a 49 -14 advantage late in the third quarter. Fremd got TD runs of 2 yards from Jacobs and an 11-yard run from Charlie Kaye (25 carries, 128 yards) to close out the scoring.

Davidson ran for a 4-yard touchdown to tie the game. And after Nate King also scored on a 4-yard run, Davidson hooked up with Zyzda again from 24 yards out. Then, as an exclamation point, Davidson tossed a Hail Mary pass to 6-foot-5 Josh Babicz to score on a 43-yard pass on the last play of the first half.

"One of the keys to the game is that you can't give up the home run," Fremd coach Lou Sponsel said. "And we gave up way too many home runs. We said singles, doubles, triples, give them up. We just didn't do that."

Barrington's defense limited Fremd to 6-for-26 passing for 111 yards with 3 interceptions. Zach Rizzio had two of those picks and Blake Holley had the other.
