Second-half blitz lifts Addison Trail

Defense has been a bright spot for Addison Trail this season, and a strong showing on that side of the ball by the Blazers in the second half of Saturday's West Suburban Conference Gold battle against Proviso East proved to be decisive.

Sacks by Matt Domek, Josh Simko, Darrion Conrad and Mike Hundley late in the game gave the offense great field position, and the Addison Trail playmakers took advantage to roll to a 43-6 victory over the Pirates on their homecoming in Maywood.

"We just dominated and all came together," Domek said. "We picked up the sacks. We started making some sacks, and that was the big key."

The Blazers (4-4, 3-3) forced a safety and scored 22 unanswered points in the fourth quarter. Offensively, Hundley was the workhorse. He ran for 79 yards on 17 carries and scored 3 times. Nick D'Ambrose and Zach Atiyeh also punched in rushing scores during that fourth quarter stretch.

During that final quarter D'Ambrose ran a punt back 32 yards to the Proviso East 2-yard line and Hundley punched it in.

"We started figured what they were doing," Hundley said. "Our lineman started picking up the blocks. We played our hearts out running the ball the best we can."

"We got the run game going in the second half," said Addison Trail coach Paul Parpet Jr. "I give our boys credit. We just came in the second half and did the things that were necessary to get out of here with a victory."

The Pirates (0-8, 0-6) were missing some starters due to school and personal issues but showed that they can be a dangerous team with crafty quarterback Trevor Moore at the helm. He did a lot of scrambling in the first half and hit numerous long passes, passing for 183 yards. His touchdown strike to Kameron James for 20 yards in the first quarter kept Proviso East close after Addison Trail quarterback Bobby Daniels opened the scoring on a 45-yard pass to Conrad with 7:46 to play in the first quarter.

It was 7-6 Blazers at the end of the first quarter and they led 14-6 at halftime.

"My quarterback is a sophomore and I expect big things out of him in the future," said Proviso East coach Thomas Williams. "The guy has all the attributes. We have to work on the offensive and defensive line - that's where we lost the game. (The Blazers) came out and did a great job of executing their offense."
