Huntley upset by Oswego

Huntley sophomore running back Eric Mooney did everything he could to propel his team to a win over 15th-seeded Oswego in Class 7A playoff action in Huntley Saturday afternoon.

But the Red Raiders didn't quite get the job done.

Mooney's 206 yards, which included touchdown runs of 72 and 32 yards, weren't enough as the visiting Panthers advanced to the quarterfinals with a hard-fought 17-14 upset win over the No. 2 seeded Red Raiders.

Huntley ends the season 10-1 while Oswego (9-2) will play the winner of the Barrington-Marist game next weekend.

"(Mooney) is an amazing, explosive player," said Oswego coach Brian Cooney. "We couldn't stop that play on the edge. He had a great game."

Actually, Mooney had an opportunity to give the Red Raiders the lead late in the game.

On a fourth-and-goal from the Oswego 9, Huntley quarterback Anthony Binetti rifled the ball to Mooney in the end zone but he couldn't quite haul in the pass.

Huntley gave up the ball to Oswego with 1:11 remaining. The Red Raiders held the Panthers on downs and forced them to punt.

Cooney elected to have punter Brice Robinson take a knee in the end zone with 38 seconds left to make the score 17-14.

The Red Raiders had one more chance to at least get in field goal range to tie the score but Binetti's second down pass was intercepted by Oswego safety Dylan Bielawski and the Red Raiders' season was over.

"These kids fought through a lot of adversity in this game but we continued to play together," said Huntley coach John Hart. "We had our opportunities but couldn't come up with enough plays. Give Oswego credit; they are a great team."

Binetti, in his final game as a Red Raider, completed 8-of-17 passes for 93 yards with 1 interception. Daniel Frederick caught 5 passes for 50 yards for Huntley.

Oswego quarterback Matthew Frank completed 19-of-32 passes for 200 yards with 2 touchdown passes.

Brice Robinson, who caught 3 passes for 46 yards, grabbed a 19-yard touchdown pass while Conor Morton caught 5 passes for 110 yards including a 55-yard scoring pass.

"It is nice to have a quality quarterback like Matthew Frank in the most important position in sports," said Cooney. "We wanted to control the ball and keep it away from Huntley. Matthew helped us do that."

In a first half dominated by defenses, the only points came on a 20-yard field goal by Morton with 8.5 seconds remaining in the half.
