Glenbrook North runs past Grant

Grant's offense finally got rolling in the second half Friday, but it was too late to prevent a 42-13 nonconference loss at Glenbrook North.

The Spartans' fast-paced spread offense couldn't be stopped. Senior Alexander Bubaris, a 5-foot-8 receiver, was all over the field. He caught touchdown passes of 63 and 68 yards, returned a punt 50 yards for another score and added an interception on defense.

Bubaris finished with 8 catches for 235 yards. Senior quarterback Kevin Burnside completed 11 of 16 passes for 279 yards and also ran for a touchdown. Glenbrook North did most of its damage with quick passes to the sideline, but Burnside hit Bubaris a couple of times over the middle for big gains.

To start the third quarter, Grant's Isaac Jaime returned a kickoff across midfield. Three plays later, sophomore QB Matt McGraw hit Drew Walker on the slant for a 40-yard touchdown pass. Jaime, who does not play on offense, came close to matching Bubaris' yardage on seven kickoff returns.

Junior Kenyon Jones (19 carries, 87 yards) added a 9-yard touchdown run to cap a 50-yard drive on the Bulldogs' next possession. Grant stopped the Spartans' starting offense twice in the second half, with Ben Bach recovering a Burnside fumble. Walker stopped Glenbrook North's first drive of the game by snagging an interception off a tipped pass.

The Spartans (2-0) opened the season by scoring 45 points in a victory at Wheeling.

Grant (0-2) will play its first-ever Northern Lake County Conference game next Friday at home against Grayslake Central.
