Week 6: Scouting the West Suburban

Glenbard West (4-1, 2-1) at Hinsdale Central (5-0, 3-0)

West Suburban Silver

Game time: Noon Saturday.

Last week: Lyons Twp. 28, Glenbard West 14; Hinsdale Central 28, Proviso West 6.

Last year: Glenbard West 35, Hinsdale Central 24.

Outlook: The latest in a string of tremendous Silver matchups features a bit of role reversal. After last week's loss by Glenbard West - its first in the Silver since 2010 - the Hilltoppers come into this one as a slight underdog, according to the rankings. Injuries to running back D.J. Ficarella and linebacker Eric Samuta won't help. Glenbard West has depth at both positions, but it's tough to replace two senior captains. Look for running backs Dre Thomas and Ryan Diver to carry the offensive load, along with quarterback Cole Brady and receiver Alex Pihlstrom in the passing game. Glenbard West struggled against the pass at times last week, although defensive lineman Dionte Moorehead applied tremendous quarterback pressure. Columbia-bound Red Devils quarterback Josh Bean has thrown for 700 yards, and four receivers boast double-digit catches. One of those receivers, sophomore running back Luke Skokna, brings offensive balance with 585 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns.

Next week: Oak Park at Glenbard West; Hinsdale Central at Lyons Twp.

Hinsdale South (2-3, 2-1) at Addison Trail (2-3, 1-2)Game time: 7:30 p.m. Friday.

The quick hit: With what's down the road, neither team can afford a fourth loss. Addison Trail longs for consistency, although Darrion Conrad's brought it on both sides of the ball. Running back Nick D'Ambrose and linebacker Andrew Felix are also playing well.

Leyden (3-2, 2-0) at Downers Grove South (2-3, 2-1)Game time: 7:30 p.m. Friday.

The quick hit: A victory keeps Leyden in great shape to move closer to the WSC Gold championship and a playoff berth. Downers South is coming off a win, but quarterback Matt Greenwald's injury is a major blow. The junior's been carrying the offense for the Mustangs.

Leyden finds itself all alone on top of the West Suburban Gold. The Eagles are coming off an impressive win over Addison Trail last week, the same AT team that rolled over Downers South earlier this season. Jalen Moore is coming off a huge game for Leyden, accounting for nearly 250 yards in rushing, throwing and kick returns. Michael Wilms continues to impress at quarterback for the Eagles.

Morton (1-4, 1-1) at Willowbrook (3-2, 1-1)Game time: 7:30 p.m. Friday.

The quick hit: Despite its record Morton has one of the Gold's top players in running back Greg Hoard. Willowbrook linebacker Jack Jessen and defensive back Khalif Copeland last week combined for 33 tackles. The Warriors capped a Silver sweep by beating York.

York (1-4, 0-2) at Oak Park (5-0, 2-0)

Game time: 7:30 p.m. Friday.

The quick hit: The Dukes suffered their third straight loss last week as the offense continues to struggle. After scoring 14 total points during that stretch, York faces a balanced Oak Park squad that's outscoring opponents by an average of 37-10 this season.
