Glenbard South handles St. Edward

Trailing St. Edward in the first half, Glenbard South went back to basics. The Raiders simplified their game plan and it paid off as they scored the last 36 points to down the Green Wave, 42-21, in Metro Suburban Blue action at Greg True Field in Elgin.

Sean Cooke ran for 175 yards and 4 touchdowns to lead the Raiders (5-2, 3-0).

Dylan Mlinarich threw for nearly 400 yards and 3 scores for St. Edward, but the outmanned Green Wave wore down late.

The Wave led 21-6 in the second quarter thanks to Mlinarich TD tosses to Jimmy Harkins, David Madden and Dominic Hartke. But the momentum swung quickly.

After Hartke's touchdown the Raiders took advantage of a short kickoff and needed just 3 plays to score. The drive covered 46 yards, with Cooke getting all of it on 3 runs.

Glenbard South scored twice more in the quarter to go up 27-21 at halftime.

The second half was all Glenbard South.

"We didn't play disciplined football the first half," said Glenbard South coach Ryan Crissey. "In the second half, we just simplified the game plan. Offensively, it was just about executing our game plan, which we were able to do successfully."

After Mlinarich was able to pick apart the Raider secondary early on, the visitors turned up the pressure on him. He went through a stretch late in the first half of completing just 1 of 9 passes for 1 yard.

The Raiders continued to ramp up the pressure, sacking him 5 times and grabbing 3 interceptions.

Vince Marra had two of the picks. Justin Goetz returned a third 99 yards, but a penalty during the runback negated the touchdown. Numan Talha Ayhan had 2 of the 5 sacks. Adam Haushahn dropped Mlinarich in the end zone for a safety.

Injuries have depleted the Green Wave roster and fatigue may have been a factor late in the game.

"We have 17 guys," said Harkins, one of those celebrating Senior Night for the Wave. "We can't afford to have anybody come off the field. "When we run out of energy, we run out of energy. There's nothing really we can do about it."

"They just wore on us," said Wave coach Mike Rolando. "Our guys are warriors. I'm very proud of their effort. We're going to scratch and claw and try to get one more win."

Mlinarich finished 34 of 61 for 391 yards with 3 TDs and 3 interceptions. However, the Wave running game netted minus-39 yards on 16 attempts.
