Valdivia extends single-season touchdown record with Foresters

Former Grayslake Central running back Joey Valdivia continued to add to his touchdown record for Lake Forest College.

The senior ran for two more in the Forresters' 53-13 victory at Grinnell, giving him 29 rushing touchdowns for the season.

He has now surpassed the previous school record by 12 touchdowns.

Valdivia carried the ball 21 times for 113 yards on the day and scored on a 9-yard run in the first quarter and a 34-yarder in the second.

Valdivia, who was all-state in football, wrestling and track and field at Grayslake Central, set Lake Forest's single-season school record for rushing yards early in the game against Grinnell. He finished with 1,535 on the year.

The Foresters finished the year with six straight victories, an 8-2 overall record, and a 6-2 mark in Midwest Conference games.

• Prior to its 34-21 loss to North Central, Carthage honored its seniors, including tight end Jon Gomulka (Lakes).

"Our seniors have come a long way and worked their tails off," said Red Men coach Mike Yeager. "This team's success now from when they came in hasn't happened on accident. It's because these guys have worked their tails off for four years and gotten themselves in a position to be a good football team."

• Augustana dropped a 37-14 decision to Wheaton on its Senior Day at Lindberg Stadium. Among the senior Vikings honored were Erik Johnson (Warren) and David Lowe (Wauconda).

Women' volleyball

Playing the final match of her college career, Augustana senior Nicole Morrissey (Lake Zurich) shared the team lead with 6 kills in a 25-7, 25-12; 25-23 victory over Rockford.

The win wrapped up a 3-1 outing in the Pumpkin Bash and a 25-8 overall record for the year.

Men's soccer

Carthage won its second straight CCIW Tournament championship defeating Wheaton College, 2-1, at Art Keller Field.

The win also gives Carthage the CCIW's Automatic Bid and guaranteed berth into the 2016 Division III Men's Soccer Championship set to begin next weekend.

Carthage broke through in the 34th minute, however, following a Wheaton foul against sophomore forward-midfielder Ivan Esquivel (Warren).

On the ensuing free kick, senior forward Austin Bitta (Libertyville) curved a ball over the wall and to the left of a diving goalkeeper to put Carthage up 1-0.

The Red Men added a second goal just six minutes into the second half as sophomore forward-midfielder Alberto Eloyza (Buffalo Grove) played a back-heel pass to Esquivel, who ripped a shot off the left post and into the net for a 2-0 lead in the 51st minute.

"Individually, (sophomore midfielder) Adrian Herrara (Palatine) was sticking tackles today all over and (junior defender) Jamie Tausend (Barrington) came to play on the back line," said Carthage coach Steve Domin. "Austin (Bitta) stuck that first goal and Ivan (Esquivel) sealed it nicely to start the second half which really put things in our favor."

Women's tennis

Carthage junior Max Mella (Warren) has been selected to the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin all-conference second team.

Mella, now a three-time All-CCIW member as a junior, and teammate Angelica Emmanuil were a dominant force at No. 1 doubles, where they won the CCIW title after upsetting the No. 1 seed from Augustana. Mella and Emmanouil went 15-4 in the fall and 7-1 against CCIW opponents in the regular season.

Individually, Mella went 11-4 in the No. 2 singles, taking third at the CCIW championships.
