Glenbard South falls on the road

GALESBURG - The Glenbard South Raiders traveled 200-plus miles to find their first victory of the season Friday night but came up empty in a game they led at halftime.

Galesburg cranked up its intensity behind Illinois State University recruit Jacob Carl to claim a 40-29 win at Galesburg and improve to 1-1.

The Silver Streaks allowed Raiders quarterback Jack Crouch 314 passing yards and 4 touchdowns and still managed to survive. Glenbard South receiver Bryan Maroney caught 4 passes for 152 yards and 3 TDs and Ryan McConville grabbed 6 passes for 143 yards.

Galesburg lost a fumble on its second offensive series and had a Demetrius Pulley interception in the end zone negated by a holding call to fall behind 10-0 and 16-7. Galesburg committed 7 penalties for 81 yards for the night.

But despite the gaudy offensive numbers, Glenbard South (0-2) was whistled for 11 penalties for 90 yards.

"We made a lot of mistakes in terms of penalties and dropped balls," said Raiders coach Ryan Crissey. "We had plenty of other opportunities to score, but we shot ourselves in the foot."

"An ugly win is better than an ugly loss," added Galesburg coach Tim Dougherty. "The kids played hard but ..."

The Streaks' 6-5, 230-pound Carl was explosive on both sides of the ball.

At tight end he caught 7 passes for 85 yards and took three handoffs for 34 yards rushing.

At his defensive end spot he helped turn the game around with two big plays.

With the Streaks trailing 16-7 midway through the first half, he blocked a Glenbard South punt and ran it 36 yards for a touchdown. Quarterback Clark Hawkins ran in the 2-point conversion to make it 16-15.

A 9-yard touchdown run by Kobe Ramirez and a 1-yard dive by Hawkins helped put Galesburg ahead 28-16 in the third quarter before Carl was needed again.

A 28-yard pass reception by Maroney and Spencer Pyle's kick pulled the Raiders within 28-23 and Glenbard South came right back to threaten once more.

McConville caught a 19-yard pass to the 1-yard line with 9:23 left in the game, but after a 5-yard procedure penalty, Carl recovered a fumble and the Streaks took over at the 10-yard line. He proceeded to catch a 16-yard pass and run for 15 more yards to start a drive that clinched the game for Galesburg.

"That's Jacob Carl," Dougherty said. "He played a great second half."

Galesburg got a couple of impressive offensive performances to help offset the big night by Crouch and his Glenbard South receivers.

Hawkins completed 13 of 17 passes for 235 yards. Ramirez ran the ball 123 times for 140 yards and 3 touchdowns, his last a 48-yarder with 1:01 left to play.
