Week 6: Scouting the West Suburban

Glenbard West (4-1, 2-0) at Lyons Township (5-0, 2-0) West Suburban Silver

Game time: 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Last week: Glenbard West 35, Downers Grove North 14; Lyons Twp. 31, Leyden 0.

Last year: Lyons Twp. 28, Glenbard West 14.

Outlook: Look at last year's score and you'll see Glenbard West's motivation in this first key step in reclaiming the Silver title. Like last year, though, the Hilltoppers' improving defense needs to find a way to slow third-year starting Lions quarterback Ben Bryant, who is committed to Cincinnati. The improvement of Glenbard West sophomore Sean Michel at cornerback and the return from injury of safety Pat Howard will help tremendously. Defensive lineman Marky Winters returned from injury last week, allowing Ben Norgaard to shift back a level to linebacker. With steady quarterback Alex Hollensbe running the show, Glenbard West has shown the ability to keep pace with just about any offense. Running backs Ryan Diver, Dre Thomas and Tyquan Cox are a handful, but they become more dangerous with the game-breaking threat of Hollensbe throwing to Alec Pierce, who has 4 receiving touchdowns, a punt return for a touchdown and a 2-point conversion.

Next week: Hinsdale Central at Glenbard West; Lyons Twp. at Downers North.

Downers North (2-3, 1-2) at Oak Park (4-1, 1-1)Game time: 7:30 p.m. Friday.

The quick hit: Drew Shelly's been a constant for the Trojans, piling up 71 rushing yards last week, but quarterback Jack Carr was solid while completing 7 of 9 passes for 110 yards. Oak Park scored 100 points the last two weeks against Morton and Proviso West.

Hinsdale South (3-2, 2-1) at Proviso East (0-5, 0-3)Game time: 7:30 p.m. Friday.

The quick hit: Not lost in the shuffle of last week's loss to Willowbrook was an inspiring performance by Hornets receiver Destin Talbert, who had 9 catches for 248 yards and 5 touchdowns. Hinsdale South averaged 37 points the last three weeks.

Leyden (2-3, 1-1) at Addison Trail (2-3, 0-2)Game time: 7:30 p.m. Friday.

The quick hit: Last week's return from injury of running back Gabriel Guarderas boosted the Eagles' offense. Addison Trail is without leading rusher Nick D'Ambrose for a second straight week. Nick Daudelin has adjusted well to his new role at "H" back. Leyden hopes its roller-coaster season can get back to the top after getting blanked against Lyons last week. Guarderas continues to be a huge bright spot for the Eagles, rushing for 459 yards already this season. Trayvon Thomas has been a force on defense and has been credited with 40 tackles and 10 assists. Addison Trail has lost 3 in a row and has been shut out in its last two games.

Morton (1-4, 1-1) at Downers South (2-3, 2-1)Game time: 7:30 p.m. Friday.

The quick hit: Last week's shutout victory over Addison Trail puts the Mustangs back in the playoff chase. Downers South is down two quarterbacks with injuries to Matt Greenwald and George Ross. Sophomore Jayden Lambert takes over behind center.

Proviso West (1-4, 0-3) at Hinsdale Central (4-1, 3-0)Game time: Noon Saturday.

The quick hit: Happy homecoming for Hinsdale Central would mean a fifth straight victory and playoff eligibility. Do-it-all senior athlete Garrett Oakey has accounted for 373 rushing yards, 214 receiving yards and he's also thrown a touchdown pass.

York (0-5) at Willowbrook (4-1)Game time: 7:30 p.m. Friday.

The quick hit: Willowbrook knows it needs to get to six wins to qualify for the playoffs. This would be a key step toward that goal. Much of last week's nearly 600 total yards last week came from running back Jack Jessen and quarterback John Taylor.
