Warren displays winning combo against Waukegan

A football coach's best friends are a good defense and a great running game.

Warren had both during a soggy homecoming contest with Waukegan on Friday night.

The Blue Devils' defense forced 6 turnovers, including a pair of interceptions from junior Brian Mohry, and the running game spearheaded by junior Martin Walker rolled up over 300 yards in a 34-0 blanking of Waukegan.

Warren improved to 5-2 overall, 4-1 in the North Suburban Conference. Waukegan remains winless at 0-7, 0-5.

The hosts opened the scoring in the first quarter when Ricky McLaughlin recovered a fumbled punt snap in the end zone. Five minutes later Walker found the end zone from 13 yards out for his first of three scores, and the Devils were rolling with a 15-0 lead.

The lead jumped up in the second quarter when Walker took advantage of a Mohry pick, running it in from 7 yards out. That burst put Warren up 25-0.

The Devils added a safety and a third scoring run from Walker in the second half to establish the final margin.

Warren has two regular-season games left, both against NSC foes on the road. In Week 8, the Blue Devils travel to Zion-Benton, and in Week 9 they'll make the trip to Stevenson.
