Week 8: Scouting the Northern Lake

North Chicago Warhawks (5-2, 3-2) at Antioch Sequoits (7-0, 5-0)

When: 7:15 p.m., today

Last week: North Chicago lost to Grayslake Central, 12-10; Antioch def. Lakes, 34-31.

Skinny: Antioch is riding high after last week's battle of the Northern Lake County Conference unbeatens with Lakes. The Sequoits now need two more wins to complete back-to-back undefeated regular seasons and win back-to-back conference titles ... Antioch showed some grit in last week's big win. The Sequoits were down twice in the fourth quarter and answered both times, including a game-winning drive that ended when quarterback Branden Gallimore hit Steve Baum with an 8-yard touchdown pass with 16 seconds left. Gallimore completed 7-of-12 passes for 113 yards. He also ran for 2 touchdowns ... Running back Hunter Price was the workhorse on the ground for the Sequoits. He rolled up 133 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries ... North Chicago, which has one of the most elusive quarterbacks in the league in Dyshawn Gales, blew a 10-0 halftime lead in losing to Grayslake Central last week. The Warhawks gave up the game-winning touchdown on a punt return ... Last year, Antioch defeated North Chicago, 42-14.

Wauconda Bulldogs (1-6, 1-4) at Grant Bulldogs (0-7, 0-5)

When: 7:15 p.m., today

Last week: Wauconda def. Round Lake, 40-18; Grant lost to Grayslake North, 48-6.

Skinny: Grant is trying desperately to get what Wauconda did last week: its first win of the season. Wauconda put together its best offensive effort of the season last week, scoring more points against Round Lake (40) than it had the previous four weeks combined. The Bulldogs also racked up 360 total yards of offense, including 210 yards on the ground. Meanwhile, quarterback Andrew Saccameno completed 11-of-14 passes for 150 yards and 3 touchdowns ... Grant suffered a decisive loss to Grayslake North with another rough offensive outing. The Bulldogs managed just 8 first downs and 138 total yards. Noah Lautner and Kenyon Jones combined for a majority of those yards, rushing for 77 and 73 yards respectively ... Grant and Wauconda are the two lowest-scoring offenses in the Northern Lake County Conference, at 11.7 points per game and 16 points per game respectively. Grant is also allowing the most points in the league, 36.3 points per game ... Last year, Wauconda defeated Grant, 22-0.

Grayslake North Knights (5-2, 4-1) at Grayslake Central Rams (3-4, 3-2)

When: 7:15 p.m., today

Last week: Grayslake North def. Grant, 48-6; Grayslake Central def. North Chicago, 12-10.

Skinny: It's the battle of Grayslake between two playoff-eligible teams, making this the first time in years that this rivalry game has significance outside of the town limits ... Grayslake North had a big game offensively last week against Grant, eventually enacting the running clock. The Knights rolled up 389 yards of offense on almost a perfect balance of running (201) and passing (188). Quarterback Austin Martineau completed 13-of-25 passes for 185 yards and 3 touchdowns. He also ran in a touchdown. Jordan Curtis was the big gainer on the ground. He rushed for 136 yards and a touchdown on just 15 carries ... Grayslake Central made quite a statement last week with a come-from-behind victory. The Rams were down 10-0 at halftime to North Chicago. Grayslake Central's first touchdown came on a trick play touchdown pass from wide receiver Nick Paul to quarterback Sam Lennartz. The winning touchdown came on a punt return from Mike Przybylski ... Last year, Grayslake North defeated Grayslake Central, 47-14.

Lakes Eagles (6-1, 4-1) at Round Lake Panthers (2-5, 0-5)

When: 7:15 p.m., today

Last week: Lakes lost to Antioch, 34-31; Round Lake lost to Wauconda, 40-18.

Skinny: This will be an emotional game for Lakes, which might still be hurting from last week's loss to rival Antioch. The loss stuck Lakes with its first loss of the season. And it came in heartbreaking fashion as Antioch scored the winning touchdown with 16 seconds remaining ... The Eagles rolled up 334 yards of offense against Antioch, including 192 passing yards from quarterback Jake Johnson, who completed 11-of-22 passes and threw for 2 touchdowns. Running back Ethan Greenfield was busy. He rushed for 96 yards on 16 carries and caught 3 passes for 78 yards ... Round Lake lost its fifth straight game after opening the season 2-0. The Panthers gave up at least 40 points for the second time this season. They allow the second-most points per game (30.3 ppg) in the Northern Lake County Conference ... Last year, Lakes defeated Round Lake, 69-7.
