Glenbard South falls to Riverside-Brookfield

Glenbard South looked to start strong against Riverside-Brookfield in the final regular reason game for both teams on Friday.

And the Raiders did just that on their first play from scrimmage when running back Drew Vozza broke off a big run for a 41-yard gain.

But Glenbard South couldn't capitalize on that opening play when the drive stalled. Then the host Bulldogs' quick-strike offense took over by scoring on a 75-yard touchdown run by Nick Del Nodal on its second play from scrimmage en route to a convincing 37-7 victory over the Raiders in Brookfield.

"(The Bulldogs) just outplayed us out front and we couldn't capitalize after we had a little momentum at the beginning of the game," said Glenbard South coach Ryan Crissey. "They are a good team. All the credit goes to them."

With the loss the Raiders dropped to 5-4 overall and 3-2 in the Metro Suburban Blue. R-B improved to 8-1 and 4-1.

Del Nodal led the Bulldogs with 142 yards on 14 carries, including 2 touchdown runs. Quarterback Hunter Hughes and wideout Zach Vaia connected on a pair of scores. The second one made it 24-0 R-B right before halftime.

"The message all week is that we wanted to start fast," said R-B coach Brendan Curtin. "They responded well and set the tone early in the game, so I am really proud of the way they came out."

Despite falling behind early, Glenbard South continued to play hard. Quarterback Jack Crouch showed his guts in the pocket by connecting on some clutch passes to wide receiver Jacob Colby and did some nice scrambling for first downs. Mike Paprota broke the shutout on a 39-yard touchdown run with 58.7 seconds left in the game.

On defense, defensive back Gavin Fitzpatrick picked off a pass and defensive lineman John Madison had a nice sack of the crafty Hughes.

"They kept fighting," Crissey said. "This is an extremely persevering group of kids and they never quit no matter the score. That's why it is a blessing to coach these kids."

Crouch thinks the Raiders can shake off this loss and make something happen in the postseason.

"We have to come out next week first half making plays," Crouch said. "I think we can make a run. We are a good team. We are better than we are tonight. I think if we really focus and have a great week of practice, we can win and keep going to see what happens."
