Batavia High School honors their state champion football team

Batavia High School students, faculty and a few family members attended an assembly Monday to honor the successes of their fall sports athletes and, in particular, to recognize the football team on their IHSA Class 7A state championship Saturday.

The Bulldogs defeated Lake Zurich 21-14 in an overtime thriller at Northern Illinois University's Huskie Stadium in DeKalb.

The crowd was welcomed by the cheerleaders and the band, who played a rendition of the Batavia High School fight song after the national anthem. Athletic Director Dave Andrews highlighted the achievements of athletes on the girls and boys cross-country teams and golf teams, the girls volleyball, swimming and tennis teams and the boys soccer team. He also announced the school had been awarded the IHSA Team Spirit Award.

Then it was the football team's turn as they entered to cheers carrying the state championship trophy, their second in five years. They quickly thanked the fans for their season-long support and posed for pictures.
