Havens, Huntley run past Jacobs

Sophomore Ryder Havens has certainly fit into Huntley's offensive scheme early in the 2018 campaign.

Havens, a sophomore transfer from Hampshire, ran for 201 yards on 17 carries and scored on second half touchdown runs of 27 and 68 yards as the Red Raiders outscored Jacobs 35-7 in the second half in cruising to a 42-7 Fox Valley Conference win in Huntley Friday night.

"My offensive line was outstanding."said Havens. "Shout out to them. They opened up some huge holes. Coach (Matt Zimzolak) told us at halftime we had to finish off plays better and cut down on the mistakes. He told us we had to make better decisions and we played much better in the second half."

Zimzolak is happy with the way Havens has fit in and in the way his team performed in the second half.

"Ryder has been a good fit," said the Huntley coach. "He does a great job of following his blocks. He is a smart, mature kid. I know Jacobs is a very good team and wasn't comfortable with only a 7-0 lead. We needed to cut out the mistakes and the penalties. We played a very good second half on offense and took advantage of our chances."

Senior quarterback Chris Raffin, who played sparingly behind standout Eric Mooney last season as a junior, scored the Raiders' (2-0, 2-0) only touchdown of the first half on a 1-yard run with 8:16 left in the first quarter.

Raffin, who ran for a 3-yard TD run in the second half, completed 14-of-23 passes for 193 yards including a 37-yard touchdown pass to Michael Boland, who caught 9 passes for 137 yards. Senior tight end Davis Pasco snared 4 passes for 35 yards for the winners.

"Chris has waited his turn and worked hard in the off-season," said Zimzolak. "He is smart and has a good knowledge of our offense."

The opportunistic Red Raider defense picked off 2 of Anthony Wilson's passes including a 22-yard touchdown on an interception by Blake Ottaviano. Patrick Roppolo also had a pick while Alexander Jahnke recovered a fumble.

"Our defense was outstanding for 4 quarters," said Zimzolak. "It always nice to win the turnover battle and get a pick 6."

Jacobs (1-1, 1-1), who lost standout tackle Jo Price to injury in the third quarter, scored its only TD of the game with 1:09 left in the third quarter on a 2-yard run by Jake Michels.

"We played well in the first half and felt good only being down 7-0 at half," said Jacobs coach Bill Mitz. "Huntley played well from the get go and the floodgates opened in the second half. Hats off to Huntley. They played a fantastic game."
