Marmion makes quick work of DuSable

Any hope of a classic Public League-Catholic League showdown evaporated in the opening minutes Friday night in Aurora.

Marmion was unmerciful to DuSable, scoring on every offensive possession.

The Cadets were no less gracious on defense, holding DuSable to negative yardage.

With short-handed DuSable dangerously close to being unable to field 11 players due to injuries, the referee halted the nonconference football with less than eight minutes to go.

Marmion was awarded a 54-0 victory.

Marmion starting running back Peter Ferraro only saw the field as the holder on extra ponts after scoring on the ground (49 yards) and via the air (4 yards) on the Cadets' opening two possessions.

"This week we were focusing on the little things," Ferraro said. "We were using this (game) to prep for Montini next week."

Marmion (2-0) only swelled its lead to four scores by the end of the first quarter.

Jacob Caceres' 5-yard touchdown run capped a third straight Marmion score that began in plus territory, and Luke Reifsyner had a 20-yard fumble return to give the Cadets a commanding 27-0 cushion after one quarter.

Marmion thoroughly dominated both lines of scrimmage.

The mulitple Cadet running backs were able to feast on the Panthers' secondary after breaking through the DuSable interior line.

Six-foot-5 Marmion two-way starting tackle Marshall Foerner was a beast on both sides for Marmion.

"We (the offensive linemen) fired off the block, finished the block and got to the next level," Foerner said.

The Marmion reserrves began replacing starters long before the hafltime intermission.

"I think it's good for the subs," Foerner said of the one-sided matchup.

Major Haas' 43-yard run around the right side gave Marmion a 41-0 lead at the break.

The combination of the Cadets' starting field position and big-play offense was such that Marmion only required one scoring drive with more the one first down.

The first Ferraro run and Haas' second-quarter nightcap both came on the opening play of the offensive sequence.

Garriet Durrian enjoyed his chance to see some action.

The junior had a 14-yard run for the Cadets' fifth first-half score and had one of three Marmion picks on the game.

"I saw the back running out," Durrian said. "(The quarterback) kind of lobbed it in the air. I was able to run under it."

Michael Gatze and Haas concluded the scoring in the second half with identical 40-yard touchdown runs.

DuSable (0-2) could muster only a pair of first downs in the game.

The first came on a Marmion roughing-the-passer penalty; feature back Jaborn Washington picked up the other with a 13-yard third-quarter run.
