Lake Forest pulls off upset of Lake Zurich

Yes, it was a shocking upset.

However, in this loss, Lake Zurich may have found something special.

It came from a sophomore. Jack Dwyer is his name.

Lake Zurich still led 7-3 in the second quarter. That's when the handoffs began. Dwyer carried 7 times in a row.

Lake Zurich was bitten by the turnover bug on Friday night. There were fumbles. There were interceptions. Dwyer's first day of offense paid off at 20 carries for 119 yards but Lake Forest (2-2) had the last laugh with a 24-7 North Suburban Conference victory on the road at Lake Zurich.

"We saw what the defense was trying to do,'' Dwyer said. "I was really the replacement for the week. We didn't execute tonight. We had too many turnovers."

Dwyer got the Bears on the board late in the first quarter. His 17-yard scamper put the Bears up. And the defense held up early.

Lake Zurich linebacker Zack Davis picked off a Scouts pass and the shutout was intact. After a Lake Forest field goal, the Bears' defense again made its mark with a fumble recovery from Logan Moskal.

Lake Zurich held that 7-3 lead at halftime.

"Maybe we overlooked Lake Forest,'' Dwyer admitted. "We need to become a much better practice team."

Lake Forest took the lead for good in the third quarter.

Two touchdown passes went up by two different Scouts quarterbacks.

The first one went to Ryan Cekay from Tommy Hanson. That one traveled 23 yards. Four minutes later, it was 17-7. Quarterback Cekay tossed one 72 yards to Breck Nowik.

Two more turnovers, one interception and one fumble went on the board for the Bears in the fourth quarter. A short TD run from Mac Uihlein completed the scoring.
